Location: Bengaluru
Company: Axtroid
Employment Type: Full-Time
Mode: Work from Office
About the role
Axtroid builds immersive AR, VR and MR applications for training, simulation, education and industrial use. Our work combines real-time 3D, XR hardware and real-world technical workflows to create practical immersive experiences.
We are looking for an XR Engineering Lead to lead a small, experienced XR development team and take technical ownership of our applications from prototype through deployment.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will still write production code, review implementations and solve difficult technical problems, while also owning architecture, engineering standards, technical delivery and the development of the team.
Axtroid develops in both Unreal Engine and Unity. You do not need to be equally strong in both engines, but you should have deep production experience in at least one and be comfortable working across different real-time 3D technology stacks.
You will also be the person the team turns to when a headset misbehaves two days before a demo.
What you'll do
Lead the technical design and delivery of AR, VR and MR applications from prototype through production deployment and client handoff.
Define application architecture, coding standards, reusable systems and engineering practices across XR projects.
Write and review production-quality code in C++/Blueprints, C#/Unity, or both, depending on the project.
Make practical technology choices between Unreal Engine, Unity, native SDKs and supporting tools based on application and hardware requirements.
Break project scope into achievable technical milestones, estimate development effort and work with project management to keep delivery on track.
Lead and mentor XR engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pairing and structured technical guidance.
Work closely with 3D artists and technical artists to define standards for geometry, materials, textures, animation, collision, lighting and asset optimization.
Design reusable systems for training and simulation applications, including guided workflows, assessment, scoring, configurable scenarios, reset/replay and application state management.
Own XR build and deployment practices including automated builds, versioning, release archives, device provisioning and deployment to target hardware.
Profile and optimize applications for standalone and PC-connected XR hardware, including CPU/GPU frame budgets, rendering, memory usage, thermal constraints and loading performance.
Troubleshoot problems across the complete XR stack including application code, headset hardware, tracking, controllers, OpenXR runtimes, vendor SDKs, GPU drivers, USB/DisplayPort connectivity and operating-system configuration.
Define logging and diagnostic mechanisms that allow QA and field teams to troubleshoot deployed applications.
Establish technical acceptance criteria and work with QA on regression testing, device compatibility, performance testing and release validation.
Work directly with clients and internal stakeholders to translate training, simulation or operational requirements into practical technical solutions.
Evaluate new XR hardware, SDKs, engine releases and development technologies and determine when they are ready for production use.
Contribute to technical hiring, interviews and evaluation of XR engineering candidates.
Must-have
Strong professional experience developing real-time 3D applications using Unreal Engine, Unity or both.
Deep expertise in at least one of:
Unreal Engine: C++, Blueprints and Unreal architecture.
Unity: C#, Unity architecture and production development.
Experience shipping at least one VR, AR or MR application to real users on production hardware.
Strong software engineering fundamentals including application architecture, object-oriented design, debugging, memory/resource management and maintainable code.
Working knowledge of OpenXR and experience integrating or debugging XR headset SDKs such as Meta, Pico, DPVR, SteamVR or equivalent.
Practical experience with XR interaction systems including controllers, tracked hands, locomotion, physical interaction and world-space user interfaces.
Understanding of XR comfort, accessibility and interaction design principles.
Experience profiling and optimizing real-time 3D applications for performance-constrained hardware.
Strong understanding of 3D mathematics including coordinate systems, transforms, vectors, rotations/quaternions and tracking spaces.
Experience using source control on large real-time 3D projects, such as Perforce, Git LFS, Diversion or equivalent.
Experience with build, release and deployment workflows.
Demonstrated technical leadership of a team, engineering workstream or significant product.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose issues spanning software, hardware and third-party SDKs.
Clear written and spoken communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Good to have
Professional experience with both Unreal Engine and Unity.
Experience developing PCVR applications and troubleshooting OpenXR/SteamVR runtimes, GPUs, DisplayPort/USB connections and headset drivers.
Experience with standalone/mobile XR optimization.
Experience delivering XR applications for training, vocational education, simulation or industrial use.
Experience designing reusable training systems including assessments, guided procedures, scoring or instructor functionality.
Familiarity with 3D content tools such as Blender, Maya, 3ds Max or Substance.
Experience diagnosing and optimizing real-time assets including meshes, skeletal assets, materials, textures, LODs and collision.
Shader development using Unreal Material Editor, Unity Shader Graph, HLSL or equivalent.
Experience with CAD and industrial data pipelines including Datasmith, USD or conversion of STEP and other engineering formats.
Experience with multiplayer, networking or colocated multi-user XR.
Experience with CI/CD, automated builds, editor tooling, Python, command-line build systems or development utilities.
Experience integrating XR applications with REST APIs, authentication, licensing, telemetry or cloud services.
Experience integrating real-time applications with Windows desktop software, launchers or device-management systems.
Familiarity with spatial mapping, anchors, plane detection, marker tracking, passthrough or computer-vision-based AR.
Knowledge of hardware peripherals, trackers, sensors or custom input devices used with XR systems.
What success looks like
You will be successful in this role when:
XR projects ship reliably and meet agreed technical and performance targets.
The team can develop efficiently without every technical decision depending on one person.
Core systems and engineering practices are reused across projects rather than rebuilt each time.
Applications run reliably on their intended hardware and can be diagnosed when problems occur in the field.
Unreal Engine and Unity are treated as tools chosen for the application rather than competing technology camps.
Engineers, artists and QA have clear technical standards and work effectively together.
Technical risks are identified early and communicated clearly before they become delivery problems.
Experience
Typically, 7+ years of professional software, game-engine or real-time 3D development experience, with substantial hands-on XR experience and prior technical leadership responsibility.
Equivalent demonstrated experience is equally valuable; we care more about what you have built and led than a specific number of years.
