Job Purpose
The Lead – Environment and Sustainability will be responsible for driving environmental compliance, resource efficiency, sustainability programs, and ESG performance across pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing operations. The role will ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulatory approvals, internal EHS standards, and customer sustainability expectations while supporting safe, compliant, and responsible business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations, consent conditions, permits, authorizations, hazardous waste rules, air and water emission norms, wastewater discharge standards, and chemical handling requirements.
Sustainability Strategy: Develop and execute sustainability roadmaps focused on energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, carbon footprint reduction, circularity, green chemistry, and responsible resource use.
ESG Data and Reporting: Collect, validate, analyze, and report ESG and sustainability data, including energy, water, waste, emissions, effluent quality, GHG inventory, and environmental KPIs for internal and external reporting.
Audits and Inspections: Lead internal environmental audits, regulatory inspections, customer audits, third-party assessments, and certification audits; ensure timely closure of observations and corrective actions.
Management Systems: Maintain and strengthen ISO 14001, ISO 45001, Responsible Care, EcoVadis, or other relevant environmental and sustainability frameworks, as applicable.
ETP and ZLD Operations: Oversee efficient operation, monitoring, and performance improvement of Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems, RO/MEE/ATFD units, sludge handling, wastewater treatment, recycling, reuse, and statutory compliance related to treated effluent and discharge norms.
Training and Culture: Conduct awareness programs and training for employees, contractors, and operating teams on environmental compliance, waste segregation, spill prevention, chemical handling, sustainability, and resource conservation.
Key Skills and Competencies
Strong knowledge of environmental compliance and sustainability practices in regulated manufacturing environments.
Ability to interpret legal requirements, consent conditions, technical reports, and audit findings.
Strong analytical skills for ESG data, KPI dashboards, environmental performance trends, and compliance reporting.
Project management capability for sustainability, resource conservation, and pollution prevention initiatives.
Effective stakeholder management with regulators, customers, auditors, plant teams, contractors, and senior leadership.
Strong communication, training, documentation, and presentation skills.
Leadership mindset with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and build a culture of environmental responsibility.
Working Relationships
Internal: EHS Head, EHS team, Engineering, Production, Quality, Warehouse, Procurement, HR, Regulatory Affairs, Projects, and Corporate Sustainability teams.
External: Pollution control authorities, regulatory bodies, customers, auditors, consultants, laboratories, waste management vendors, equipment suppliers, and certification agencies.
Qualification & Experience
B.Tech/M.Tech in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or related discipline from a recognized institute.
10–15 years of relevant experience in environmental compliance, ETP/ZLD operations, sustainability, and ESG functions, preferably in specialty chemicals, pharmaceutical, or regulated manufacturing industries.
