The Role
We’re seeking a Staff Software Engineer – Backend to take end‑to‑end ownership of our backend systems. This role goes beyond coding — you’ll drive architecture evolution, reliability, scalability, operational excellence, and modernization of the backend stack, while mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives across teams.
What You’ll Do
Design, build, and maintain backend services using Node.js / Sails.js
Own and evolve backend architecture to ensure scalability, reliability, and modernization
Optimise and manage PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, and Elasticsearch at scale
Implement background jobs with Bull/BullMQ and cron workflows
Deploy and manage services on AWS (EKS, S3, CodeBuild) using Docker & Kubernetes
Leverage AI‑assisted development tools (like Claude Code) to ship faster with high quality
Lead code reviews, set best practices, and contribute to engineering standards
Drive operational excellence by improving monitoring, alerting, and incident response practices
Collaborate cross‑functionally with product, design, and frontend teams to deliver end‑to‑end features
Build and maintain scalable data pipelines to move operational and product data into data lakes and analytics systems
Design ETL/ELT workflows for transforming and enriching large datasets used across search, pricing, reporting, and AI systems
Collaborate with engineering and analytics teams to ensure reliable, high‑quality data flows across the platform
Provide cross‑team technical leadership, guiding decisions that impact multiple systems and stakeholders
What We’re Looking For
5+ years of backend development experience with Node.js
Strong expertise in Sails.js or similar frameworks (Express, NestJS, Fastify)
Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL & MongoDB (schema design, query optimization, indexing, migrations)
Hands‑on experience with Redis (caching, queues, sessions, pub/sub)
Solid understanding of REST APIs, microservices, and distributed systems
Production experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes
Familiarity with Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and code reviews
Proficiency with AI‑assisted development tools — core to how we work
Strong problem‑solving skills, autonomy, and excellent communication in remote teams
Experience building and maintaining data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows in production environments
Strong understanding of data modeling, transformation, and large‑scale data processing concepts
Experience working with large datasets and optimizing data workflows for scalability and reliability
Proven ability to lead technical initiatives across teams and influence architectural direction
Bonus Points
Experience with Elasticsearch or Algolia for search/discovery
Familiarity with AI/LLM APIs (Anthropic Claude, OpenAI)
Background in e‑commerce, hospitality tech, or B2B platforms
Experience with vector databases (Pinecone) and semantic search
Track record of mentoring developers or leading teams
Contributions to open‑source projects
