About the Role
We are looking for a highly skilled Australian Taxation professional to join our growing team as an Australian Tax Manager.
This is a technical and leadership role for someone who has strong hands-on experience in Australian taxation and is confident working independently on complex tax matters, reviewing work prepared by others, and guiding a team.
The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of Australian tax returns, tax workpapers, tax compliance, tax research and review processes, with the ability to identify issues before work reaches the client.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and review Australian individual, company, trust and partnership tax returns
Prepare and/or review complex Australian tax workpapers
Perform detailed tax workpaper reviews and quality control
Review tax calculations, supporting schedules and tax return disclosures
Handle complex areas including:
Capital Gains Tax (CGT)
Rental property and investment property taxation
Division 7A
Trust distributions and beneficiary taxation
Company taxation
Depreciation and capital allowances
Business income and deductions
Share/investment transactions
Foreign income and foreign tax matters
Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT)
Superannuation-related tax matters
Tax adjustments and reconciliations
Identify technical tax issues and determine the appropriate treatment
Conduct Australian tax research and apply legislation, ATO guidance and relevant rulings
Review and improve existing workpaper processes and templates
Review client files for completeness, accuracy and compliance
Review correspondence/emails prepared by the team before they are sent to clients where required
Handle complex queries from Australian accountants and clients
Mentor and technically develop junior and senior tax staff
Allocate/review work and assist with workflow management
Ensure work is completed within agreed deadlines and quality standards
Take ownership of technically difficult files rather than simply escalating them
What We Are Looking For
Essential:
6+ years of relevant experience in Australian taxation
Strong practical experience with Australian tax compliance
Excellent knowledge of Australian tax workpapers
Strong experience reviewing tax returns and workpapers prepared by other team members
Ability to independently identify and resolve technical tax issues
Strong understanding of Australian tax legislation and ATO requirements
Experience working with Australian accounting firms or Australian clients
Excellent attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to lead, train and review a team
Ability to work independently and take ownership of deliverables
Advantageous
Experience with:
Xero
Xero Practice Manager / Xero Tax
HandiTax / other Australian tax software
BGL or similar accounting/tax platforms
Australian accounting firm workflows
Tax planning and advisory
Complex CGT and investment transactions
Trust and company tax
BAS/GST and FBT
The Person We Want
