Job Summary
The Technical Project Leader – Electronics & Software Systems provides technical and project leadership for the development, integration, validation, and release of electronic and software systems for Cummins products. This role serves as the primary customer interface, leading cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software and electronics solutions while managing scope, schedule, budget, resources, and technical risks throughout the product lifecycle.
The incumbent translates customer and product requirements into robust hardware and software solutions, drives systems engineering activities, ensures compliance with Cummins VPI processes, and enables successful project execution. This position also provides technical leadership, mentors engineering teams, and drives continuous improvement across engineering processes, product quality, and project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the primary technical point of contact for customers and external business units (EBU) throughout the project lifecycle.
Lead the planning, execution, integration, validation, and release of electronic and software systems for Cummins products.
Translate customer and product requirements into hardware and software technical requirements.
Manage overall project scope, schedule, milestones, deliverables, and handoffs to internal and external stakeholders.
Plan and align engineering resources across cross-functional teams to meet project objectives.
Lead risk identification and mitigation activities related to architecture, design implementation, schedule, scope, and resource planning.
Manage project changes, resolve conflicts, and proactively remove execution barriers.
Support engineering teams in technical problem resolution and facilitate timely issue closure.
Manage project financials, including quotations, budgeting, forecasting, actual cost tracking, and recovery planning.
Investigate complex electronic application and system issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement robust corrective actions.
Develop, manage, and continuously improve systems engineering processes including system specification, modeling, simulation, calibration, validation, troubleshooting, and Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R).
Collaborate with customers, product engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
Review technical work of engineers to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient designs.
Provide technical leadership, coaching, and mentoring to engineers while supporting development of future technical talent.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives across engineering processes, project execution, and product quality.
Ensure compliance with Cummins engineering standards, VPI processes, and organizational quality requirements.
Experience
Prior experience as a Technical Project Leader (TPL), Technical Specialist, or equivalent engineering leadership role within a product, technology, or engineering services environment.
Proven success leading cross-functional engineering teams through multiple product development lifecycles.
Strong experience in electronic controls design, software development, integration, troubleshooting, and validation.
Demonstrated knowledge of electronics and software system architecture and development processes.
Experience managing project scope, schedules, resources, budgets, technical risks, and customer deliverables.
Experience working with Cummins engineering processes and tools, including VPI, PPT, VPCR, SAFe Agile, and CSAR (preferred).
Demonstrated ability to provide technical direction, mentor engineers, make quality technical decisions, and successfully deliver complex engineering projects.
Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to operate effectively in ambiguous and rapidly changing environments.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related STEM discipline is required.
Master's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline is preferred for selected roles.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is preferred.
This position may require compliance with export control and regulatory requirements.
