Chief Operating Officer (COO)Detailed Job DescriptionJob Overview
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for leading the company’s overall operational strategy, execution, organizational performance, and business operations. This executive ensures that corporate strategies are effectively translated into operational plans, scalable processes, measurable performance objectives, and sustainable business results.
The COO works closely with the CEO, executive leadership team, Board of Directors, and functional leaders to oversee day-to-day operations while driving long-term operational excellence, organizational efficiency, business continuity, and profitable growth. The role serves as a key strategic partner to the CEO and is responsible for ensuring that the organization operates efficiently, consistently, and at scale.
Key ResponsibilitiesI. Operations Strategy and Executive Leadership
Develop and execute enterprise-wide operational strategies aligned with corporate objectives and long-term growth plans.
Translate the company’s strategic vision into operational priorities, execution plans, performance targets, and organizational initiatives.
Provide executive leadership across core business operations and ensure effective coordination among business functions.
Advise the CEO and executive leadership team on operational performance, organizational capabilities, resource requirements, and execution risks.
Establish operating models, governance frameworks, and management systems that support sustainable business growth.
II. Enterprise Operational Management
Oversee the company’s day-to-day operations across business units, functions, regions, and operating locations.
Ensure operational activities consistently meet established financial, quality, productivity, customer, and performance objectives.
Establish clear operational accountability, decision-making structures, reporting processes, and performance standards.
Monitor organizational capacity and ensure operational resources are aligned with strategic priorities.
Identify operational bottlenecks, execution gaps, and organizational inefficiencies and implement corrective actions.
III. Operational Excellence and Process Optimization
Lead enterprise-wide initiatives focused on operational excellence, productivity improvement, cost optimization, and process efficiency.
Standardize critical business processes, operating procedures, performance frameworks, and operational best practices.
Identify opportunities to eliminate unnecessary complexity, reduce operational costs, and improve organizational productivity.
Implement continuous improvement programs across business functions and operating units.
Promote a culture of accountability, efficiency, innovation, quality, and continuous operational improvement.
IV. Business Execution and Cross-Functional Coordination
Coordinate execution across operations, finance, technology, product, sales, marketing, human resources, supply chain, and other functional teams.
Ensure strategic initiatives are translated into clearly defined operational plans and measurable business outcomes.
Establish cross-functional governance mechanisms for major corporate initiatives and transformation programs.
Resolve organizational conflicts, execution barriers, and resource constraints that could affect business performance.
Maintain strong alignment between corporate strategy, operational execution, customer requirements, and financial objectives.
V. Financial and Resource Management
Partner with the CFO and executive leadership team to align operational plans with financial objectives and business performance targets.
Oversee operational budgets, resource allocation, cost structures, and productivity initiatives.
Evaluate operational investments, capital requirements, workforce needs, and infrastructure priorities.
Identify opportunities to improve profitability through cost management, productivity improvement, capacity optimization, and process redesign.
Ensure operational resources are deployed efficiently across business units, projects, markets, and strategic priorities.
VI. Risk Management, Quality, and Business Continuity
Establish enterprise operational risk-management frameworks covering business continuity, operational resilience, quality, compliance, and execution risks.
Identify and mitigate operational risks that could affect customers, employees, financial performance, regulatory compliance, or business continuity.
Ensure business operations comply with applicable laws, regulations, internal policies, contractual requirements, and industry standards.
Develop contingency plans and operational continuity strategies for critical business functions.
Establish appropriate controls, escalation mechanisms, and crisis-response processes for significant operational events.
VII. Performance Management and Digital Transformation
Establish enterprise operational KPIs and performance-management systems covering productivity, cost, quality, efficiency, customer experience, and business outcomes.
Review operational performance regularly and provide actionable recommendations to executive leadership.
Implement technology, automation, analytics, and digital platforms to improve operational visibility and decision-making.
Lead operational transformation initiatives designed to modernize processes, systems, organizational structures, and operating models.
Use data-driven insights to improve forecasting, resource allocation, operational efficiency, and business performance.
VIII. Leadership and Organizational Development
Build, lead, and develop a high-performing global operations organization.
Recruit, mentor, and develop senior operational leaders and functional executives.
Establish organizational structures, leadership standards, performance expectations, and succession-planning processes.
Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, customer focus, operational discipline, and continuous improvement.
Represent the company in executive meetings, Board discussions, strategic planning sessions, major customer engagements, and important external business forums.
QualificationsEducation Background
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Finance, Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Economics, or a related field.
Master’s degree, MBA, or advanced degree preferred.
Additional professional qualifications in operations management, strategy, finance, technology, or industry-specific disciplines are advantageous.
Work Experience
Typically 18+ years of progressive experience in operations, business management, strategy, finance, supply chain, technology, or related functions.
Typically 10+ years of experience in senior management, executive leadership, or enterprise operational roles.
Demonstrated experience leading complex organizations, multiple business units, regions, or large-scale operational functions.
Proven track record of improving operational efficiency, organizational performance, profitability, scalability, and business execution.
Experience in multinational organizations or complex industries such as technology, healthcare, financial services, semiconductor, biotechnology, manufacturing, logistics, energy, or professional services is preferred.
Experience working directly with CEOs, Boards of Directors, executive leadership teams, major customers, strategic partners, and other senior stakeholders.
