Project context
This position carries wireless expertise for a large campus estate spanning roughly one hundred sites. It is the most exposed of the five profiles, because the LAN and Wi-Fi scope is the first to transfer from the outgoing supplier.
The holder is expected to be a genuine wireless specialist, not a generalist with wireless exposure, deep expertise in Cisco Enterprise Wireless technologies and a strong understanding of RF engineering principles. The candidate must be able to analyse, troubleshoot and optimise wireless environments from both infrastructure and radio perspectives, rather than solely through controller or configuration management.
Moreover, he must carry the monitoring of that estate as a second skill.
Goals and deliverables
Responsibilities
• Resolve incidents and service requests within agreed SLA targets, with structured troubleshooting and analysis before any escalation.
• Maintain complete, evidence-based ticket documentation; escalate to Level 3 only with full diagnostic detail.
• Own backlog hygiene, timely stakeholder updates and disciplined shift handovers to guarantee operational continuity.
• Author and maintain Knowledge Base Articles and runbooks; identify repeat incidents suitable for shift-left to Level 1.
• Apply ITIL incident, change and problem management, and comply with internal security and audit requirements.
• Contribute to Major Incident support, KPI reporting and operational performance reviews, and to problem management investigations.
Specific responsibilities
In addition to the core responsibilities stated above:
• Troubleshoot wireless controllers and access points: roaming failures, co-channel interference, coverage versus capacity.
• Experience performing root-cause analysis of complex wireless client issues using RF metrics and packet captures.
• Operate wireless security: WPA2 and WPA3, guest access isolation, certificate lifecycle and expiry incidents.
• Operate Cisco Catalyst switching on IOS-XE: stack failures, upgrade paths, configuration archive.
• Support 802.1X and network access control with Cisco ISE: authentication chain failures, profiling, MAB fallback.
• Apply and police the campus LAN and VLAN standards; identify non-compliant sites.
• Build and maintain monitoring templates for the wireless and switching estate.
