About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

TopSpeech Health helps people fix speech impediments. A lisp. An R that comes out as a W. A stutter. Most of our users have lived with it for years, and many were told it was too late. We build AI-powered speech therapy, designed with licensed speech-language pathologists, that people can do from their phone.
We're a small, bootstrapped team, and we're hiring one writer.
This role has a required writing assignment. Applications without it won't be reviewed. Details are under "How to apply" at the end.
The job
Most of our users find us through Google. They search "how to fix a lisp as an adult" late at night, after a meeting where someone asked them to repeat themselves. Your job is to write the page they land on.
We already have an SEO plan. It lists every article, its keywords, and its section headings. You don't need to invent the plan. You need to follow it, and write each article so well that the reader feels understood by the second paragraph.
That's the core of this role: understand the user, then write to them. Most days, you'll be writing.
How we want you to write
We want writing in the spirit of Paul Graham's essays. Read "Write Simply" and "How to Write Usefully" before you apply. In short:
Plain words and short sentences. If a 12-year-old can't follow it, rewrite it.
Say something true and useful the reader didn't already know.
Be direct. If you're sure of something, say it without hedging.
Cut, then cut again. Every sentence has to earn its place.
Write from the reader's side of the table, not ours.
SEO articles don't have to read like SEO articles. The keywords are the skeleton. The writing is why people stay, trust us, and take our free speech test.
What you'll do
Core (most of your time):
Write articles from our SEO plan, on a steady weekly cadence
Read user feedback, reviews, and support messages until you know how our users think and talk
Talk to users when you can. The best lines come from them.
Work with our speech-language pathologist advisors to keep every article clinically accurate
Update older articles as we learn what works
Secondary (the marketer part):
Watch the numbers: search traffic, rankings, time on page, sign-ups. Learn which pieces actually work.
Pitch new places to use your writing: LinkedIn, email, Reddit, landing pages, video scripts, or anything else you think will reach people
Turn articles into posts, emails, and scripts
Tell us when something isn't working, and what you'd do instead
Who we're looking for
YC tells founders to make something people want and to talk to their users. We want a writer who works that way.
You write clearly, and you can show it: a blog, a Substack, essays, anything.
You have empathy. You can imagine what it's like to dread saying your own name.
You work hard and ship consistently. Articles go out on schedule, week after week, without anyone chasing you.
You're curious. You'll read up on speech therapy, and on what YC and good founders say about content and distribution.
You think like a marketer. You care whether your writing brings in users, not only whether it sounds good.
You're comfortable with basic analytics (Google Search Console, Google Analytics, PostHog, or similar), or you'll learn fast.
You know SEO basics: search intent, headings, internal links.
Excellent written English.
Nice to have:
Experience writing about health, education, or self-improvement
Experience growing an audience on LinkedIn or another platform
Why join
Your work helps people speak with confidence.
Real ownership. Small team, direct work with the founder, no layers.
Fully remote.
You'll see how a startup grows from the inside.
How to apply (assignment required)
Our article "Lisp Test: Identify Your Lisp Type in 5 Minutes" is one of our most popular pages:
https://topspeech.health/lispspeechclinic/guide/lisp-test.html
Your assignment: rewrite it and make it better.
Keep the same topic and target keyword ("lisp test"). Someone who searched that phrase should still get what they came for.
Beyond that, change whatever you want: structure, headings, wording, what to keep, what to cut.
Write it for the person reading, the way Paul Graham would.
To apply:
Apply here on LinkedIn.
Put your rewrite in a Google Doc with comment access turned on.
Add a short note (under 200 words) at the top of the doc: what you changed, why, and one idea for getting this article in front of more people.
Send the doc link, plus links to 2-3 other pieces you've written, to team@topspeech.health with the subject "Content Writer - [Your Name]".
We only review applications that include the rewrite. We read every one that does. Plain and clear beats long and clever.
