About The Role
As Director, Legal – Product and Regulatory, you will lead legal support for KOHO’s product development and regulatory strategy across both KOHO Tech and KOHO Bank (letters patent pending)
You will work closely with Product, Technology, Marketing, Risk, and Compliance teams to provide practical legal advice that enables innovation while protecting customers and maintaining strong regulatory standards.
This role is ideal for a lawyer who enjoys rolling up the sleeves and building new things, solving complex regulatory questions, and taking ownership of outcomes in a fast-moving, flat organization.
What You’ll Do
Partner across KOHO Tech and KOHO Bank (letters patent pending) to provide practical regulatory advice that enables growth while protecting customers.
Support the design and launch of new financial products and features, identifying regulatory risks early and helping teams build compliant solutions.
Play a key role in helping KOHO establish and operationalize a regulated bank, including supporting engagement with regulators such as OSFI, FCAC, and the Bank of Canada.
Support Marketing and Growth teams by ensuring campaigns are effective and compliant with financial services and consumer protection requirements.
Provide guidance to customer-facing teams on complaint handling, communications, and fairness considerations.
Help build scalable legal and regulatory processes to support KOHO’s long-term growth as a regulated financial institution.
Support the development of knowledge management for Legal.
Mentor other members of the Legal team and represent Legal in cross-functional and leadership forums.
Experience
What You’ll Bring
10+ years of post-call experience as a lawyer practicing in Canada (in-house and/or at a law firm), with substantial in-house experience.
Direct experience advising on the launch of retail banking products, as well as related financial services regulation, banking law, and consumer protection frameworks.
Demonstrated ability to operate with significant autonomy and deliver practical, business-oriented legal advice to senior stakeholders.
A track record of leading complex legal or regulatory initiatives with minimal oversight.

Nice to Have's
Experience working at both a large bank and a smaller tech startup or fintech, ideally through a bank charter or launch process.
Experience engaging directly with regulators.
Lobbying or government relations experience.
Familiarity with the RPAA and the Financial Consumer Protection Framework (FCPF).
AML advisory experience at a bank.
Experience implementing privacy laws.
Experience mentoring or managing junior legal counsel.
Fluent in French.
The budgeted salary range for this role is $220,000 - 260,000 CAD / year.

Vous travaillerez en étroite collaboration avec les équipes Produit, Technologie, Marketing, Risques et Conformité afin de fournir des conseils juridiques pratiques qui favorisent l’innovation, tout en protégeant les clients et en maintenant des normes réglementaires élevées.
Ce rôle convient parfaitement à un.e avocat.e qui aime mettre la main à la pâte et bâtir de nouvelles choses, résoudre des questions réglementaires complexes et prendre en charge les résultats dans une organisation dynamique et peu hiérarchisée.
Ce que vous ferez
Collaborer avec KOHO Tech et KOHO Bank (lettres patentes en attente) afin de fournir des conseils réglementaires pratiques qui favorisent la croissance tout en protégeant les clients.
Soutenir la conception et le lancement de nouveaux produits et de nouvelles fonctionnalités financières, en cernant les risques réglementaires en amont et en aidant les équipes à concevoir des solutions conformes.
Jouer un rôle clé dans l’établissement et la mise en œuvre d’une banque réglementée pour KOHO, notamment en soutenant les relations avec des organismes de réglementation tels que le BSIF, l’ACFC et la Banque du Canada.
Soutenir les équipes Marketing et Croissance en veillant à ce que les campagnes soient efficaces et conformes aux exigences applicables aux services financiers et à la protection des consommateurs.
Conseiller les équipes en contact avec la clientèle sur le traitement des plaintes, les communications et les enjeux liés à l’équité.
Contribuer à la mise en place de processus juridiques et réglementaires évolutifs afin de soutenir la croissance à long terme de KOHO à titre d’institution financière réglementée.
Soutenir le développement de la gestion des connaissances au sein de l’équipe Juridique.
Encadrer d’autres membres de l’équipe Juridique et représenter la fonction Juridique au sein de forums interfonctionnels et de direction.
Ce que vous apporterez
Expérience
Plus de 10 ans d’expérience après l’admission au barreau à titre d’avocat.e au Canada (en entreprise et/ou en cabinet), dont une expérience substantielle en entreprise.
Expérience directe en matière de conseils liés au lancement de produits bancaires de détail, ainsi qu’en réglementation des services financiers, en droit bancaire et dans les cadres de protection des consommateurs connexes.
Capacité démontrée à travailler avec un haut degré d’autonomie et à fournir des conseils juridiques pratiques et axés sur les affaires à des parties prenantes de niveau supérieur.
Expérience avérée dans la direction d’initiatives juridiques ou réglementaires complexes avec un minimum de supervision.
