Role Description The Underwriting Manager is a full-time, remote role responsible for overseeing the mortgage underwriting team and ensuring loans meet company guidelines, investor requirements, and regulatory standards. This role includes reviewing complex loan files, making final credit decisions, and providing guidance on risk assessment and loan structuring.
The Underwriting Manager will develop and refine underwriting policies, monitor pipeline and service levels, and collaborate with sales, operations, and compliance to support an efficient, customer-focused lending process.
Daily responsibilities also include coaching and mentoring underwriters, conducting quality audits, resolving escalated issues, collaborating with the sales team to find ways to make loans work, and contributing to continuous process improvement and training initiatives.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess strong Analytical Skills to evaluate credit risk, income, assets, and collateral, and to interpret complex financial data.
Candidates should possess Mortgage Underwriting and Underwriting expertise, including experience with conventional, government, non-QM, and construction loan products and current investor and agency guidelines.
Candidates should possess Insurance and Finance knowledge relevant to mortgage lending, including understanding of hazard insurance, mortgage insurance, and financial regulations.
Experience managing or leading underwriting teams, with the ability to coach, provide feedback, and support professional development.
Thorough understanding of federal, state, and agency mortgage regulations and compliance requirements.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams in a remote environment.
High level of organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field, and relevant professional certifications or designations in mortgage or underwriting.
