Role Description The Freelance Environmental & Social Auditor will conduct on-site assessments of producer organizations and supply chain partners in Delhi, India, focusing on compliance with Fairtrade environmental and social criteria. This temporary, on-site role involves planning and executing audits, reviewing documentation, interviewing workers and management, and inspecting facilities and field operations. The auditor will analyze environmental management practices, labor conditions, health and safety measures, and community impacts, and prepare clear, evidence-based audit reports and recommendations. The role also includes engaging with stakeholders to explain findings, supporting corrective action planning, and maintaining accurate records in line with Fairtrade’s policies and audit protocols. The position requires flexibility to visit multiple sites, uphold impartiality and ethical standards, and collaborate with the wider Fairtrade auditing team when needed.
Qualifications
Experience in environmental auditing or environmental management, including assessment of resource use, waste management, and sustainability practices.
Background in social compliance, labor rights, or human rights due diligence, with proven ability to evaluate working conditions and worker protections.
Strong skills in data collection, analysis, and report writing, with the ability to present complex findings in clear, structured audit reports.
Knowledge of supply chain standards, certification systems, or ESG frameworks, preferably related to agriculture or manufacturing.
Ability to conduct interviews and field inspections in diverse settings, maintaining neutrality, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in Hindi or other local languages is an advantage.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental science, social sciences, sustainability, agriculture, or a related field.
Demonstrated ability to work independently in on-site roles, manage time effectively, and meet tight deadlines for audit delivery.
Prior experience with Fairtrade, other certification schemes, or NGO/impact sector work is beneficial.
Willingness and ability to travel within Delhi and potentially to nearby regions for site visits, following all safety and ethical guidelines.
