Role Description The Software Engineer Intern role is a full-time remote position focused on contributing to the development of fraud detection and prevention systems. Day-to-day responsibilities include implementing and testing back-end services, writing clean and maintainable code, and supporting the integration of APIs and data sources into core products. The intern collaborates with engineers and product stakeholders to refine technical requirements, debug issues, and improve system performance and reliability. The role also involves participating in code reviews, learning best practices in software engineering, and documenting features and technical processes to support ongoing product development.
Qualifications
Foundational knowledge in Computer Science and Software Development, including algorithms, data structures, and software design principles.
Hands-on experience or coursework in Programming and Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), using at least one modern programming language (e.g., Python, Java, C++, or similar).
Exposure to Back-End Web Development, such as working with APIs, databases, and server-side frameworks.
Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to learn new technologies quickly.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in a remote, cross-functional environment.
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git) and basic software development workflows; interest in security, fraud detection, or data-intensive systems is a plus.

Gala Intelligence is building a system where a user enters a phone number and we need to determine whether that number appears trustworthy, suspicious, spam-related, or simply has insufficient information. You have access to multiple sources such as our internal database, public internet sources, third-party APIs, user reports, and business data, but the data can be incomplete, outdated, contradictory, slow to retrieve, or unavailable - and for many phone numbers you may find almost no useful information at all.
If you were the engineer responsible for building the first version of this system, how would you approach the problem from start to finish - what would you check, how would you combine and validate the different signals, how would you handle conflicting or missing information and unavailable APIs, how would you keep the system fast and scalable, what assumptions would you make, and what would you build first if you had only two weeks?
There is no single correct answer. We are interested in understanding how you think, break down an ambiguous problem, identify trade-offs, question assumptions, and arrive at a practical solution.
