The role
Mollie Bigley Studio is seeking one experienced Lead Designer to manage high-end residential projects remotely from concept through construction and installation.
This is a full-time, long-term independent consulting engagement. The successful candidate will take ownership of assigned projects while collaborating closely with the studio principal and directing support from our Bermuda-based team.
This position requires an accomplished residential designer who combines strong creative judgment with technical knowledge, project leadership and excellent client communication. The Lead Designer must be able to maintain the overall design vision while managing the documentation, coordination, decisions and follow-up required to deliver a completed home.
The designer will work remotely and direct local team members in obtaining site dimensions, photographs and other field information. Regular availability during Bermuda/Atlantic business hours is required. Occasional company-paid travel to Bermuda will be required at key project stages.
Key responsibilities
Lead assigned high-end residential projects from concept design through construction and installation
Develop cohesive architectural and interior design solutions
Establish project priorities, deliverables and design schedules
Produce and oversee space plans, architectural drawings, interior elevations, cabinetry designs, lighting concepts, furniture plans and finish specifications
Prepare and review drawings, schedules, presentations and technical documentation
Coordinate design information with structural and mechanical, electrical and plumbing consultants
Direct local team members in gathering dimensions, documenting existing conditions and following up on site-related questions
Present design concepts, selections and recommendations to clients
Coordinate with consultants, contractors, millworkers, tradespeople, suppliers and vendors
Review consultant drawings, shop drawings, samples and submittals for consistency with the approved design
Identify missing information and potential coordination issues before they affect permitting, procurement or construction
Support FF&E specifications, budgeting, approvals, procurement and installation planning
Provide remote construction-phase support and participate in virtual site meetings
Guide and review work completed by junior designers, drafters and local team members
Contribute to the continued development of the studio’s drawing standards, systems and processes
Qualifications
Substantial professional experience leading high-end residential design projects
A degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Interior Design or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
A strong portfolio demonstrating completed high-end residential work
Proven experience managing projects from concept through construction and installation
Strong design judgment and a refined understanding of residential planning, materials, finishes, cabinetry, lighting, furnishings and architectural detailing
Experience producing and reviewing coordinated construction drawings and technical documentation
Strong knowledge of residential construction and consultant coordination
Ability to independently manage projects while collaborating closely with a studio principal
Excellent organizational, project-management and client-facing communication skills
Ability to provide clear direction and review the work of remote and local team members
Confidence coordinating with contractors, consultants, suppliers and residential clients
Advanced proficiency in relevant drawing, modelling and presentation software
Willingness to learn Bermuda-specific building regulations and construction practices
Consistent availability during Bermuda/Atlantic business hours
Legal ability to provide independent professional services from the applicant’s location
Compensation
The annual consulting fee is US$100,000–$125,000+, depending on experience, qualifications and location.
