HR Generalist
SBG Builders, LLC | Full-Time | Remote (U.S.)
Reports to: Operations Manager & CEO
Pay Range: $75,000 to $85,000 per year, based on experience

SBG Builders is a growing commercial general contractor operating in California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and Texas. We self-perform several trades and partner with specialty subcontractors. We're building our systems the right way from the ground up and need an HR Generalist who wants to help shape how we operate.
Position Summary
The HR Generalist supports the full employee lifecycle for a multistate field and office workforce, with a strong focus on payroll accuracy, job cost labor data, and compliance. This role works closely with operations, project management, and field foremen to keep our people processes consistent, compliant, and efficient.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll and Timekeeping
Process weekly payroll in Paychex Flex for hourly field crews and salaried staff across multiple states
Review time and attendance records, resolve punch exceptions with foremen, and verify meal and rest break attestations
Audit labor distribution and job/cost code accuracy before payroll is submitted
Prepare weekly payroll summaries and support the Procore direct cost import for job costing
Apply state-specific rules for overtime, double time, sick leave accrual, and final pay (CA, WA, OR, NV, TX)
Support certified payroll reporting on public works projects as needed
Workers' Compensation and Compliance
Prepare workers' comp reporting, including Washington L&I quarterly hours-based reporting and California class code allocation
Maintain accurate class code assignments as crews move between trades and projects
Coordinate claims intake and return-to-work documentation with the carrier and supervisors
Track and maintain required postings, notices, and state registrations
Support benefit plan compliance filings (ACA, 401(k)/Form 5500) with vendors and the CPA
Onboarding and Employee Records
Manage onboarding for field and office hires, including remote I-9 completion through authorized representatives at jobsites
Maintain organized, compliant personnel, I-9, and medical files in SharePoint
Administer offboarding, termination checklists, and final pay timing by state
Track certifications, licenses, and required safety training for field employees
Employee Relations and Policy
Serve as first point of contact for employee questions on pay, benefits, and policy
Assist with investigations, documentation, and corrective action
Help administer 90-day, 6-month, and annual review cycles
Support updates to the employee handbook and HR SOPs as the company grows
Assist with worker classification reviews (employee vs. independent contractor)
Benefits and Recruiting
Coordinate open enrollment, new hire enrollments, and life event changes
Post jobs, screen applicants, and coordinate interviews for field and office roles
Ensure job postings meet state pay transparency requirements
Qualifications
Required
2+ years of HR generalist or payroll experience
Multistate payroll experience, including California wage and hour law
Hands-on experience with Paychex Flex or a comparable payroll/HRIS platform
Working knowledge of I-9, FLSA, and state leave laws
Strong attention to detail and comfort working with job cost data
Ability to work independently and communicate clearly in a remote environment
Preferred
Experience in construction or another field-based industry
Workers' compensation reporting experience
Certified payroll / prevailing wage experience
Familiarity with Procore, Monday.com, and Microsoft 365/SharePoint
Bilingual English/Spanish
SHRM-CP, PHR, or FPC certification
Work Environment
Fully remote with reliable internet and a private workspace. Working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Weekly payroll deadlines are firm and must be met. Occasional travel to jobsites or the office may be required.
