Universal Removal Defense Project is building a 21st-century human rights organization for immigration removal defense designed from the beginning to serve people across languages, cultures, and geographic boundaries. We believe removal defense is more than an immigration-law issue.
It is a human rights issue.
When a person faces detention, family separation, persecution, or removal without meaningful access to legal representation, the consequences can alter the course of an entire life.
URDP is working to build a different model for the modern era.
Through remote legal-service delivery, multilingual technology, advanced language-access tools, culturally responsive advocacy, and a growing network of immigration attorneys, human-rights advocates, and engineers, URDP is developing legal infrastructure designed to reach people traditional systems too often leave behind.
We Are Seeking a Program-Wide Supervising Immigration Attorney.
URDP is seeking an experienced immigration attorney interested in serving as a Volunteer Program-Wide Supervising Attorney for our developing immigration legal-services program as URDP prepares for DOJ Recognition and Accreditation. This is a professional legal-supervision role distinct from URDP's network of Technical Legal Assistance Attorneys.
The Supervising Attorney would help establish and maintain the professional legal and ethical supervision framework governing URDP's authorized immigration legal work.
Responsibilities may include:
Providing professional supervision and legal guidance to DOJ-Accredited representatives and other authorized legal personnel
Establishing supervision, case-review, and escalation protocols
Reviewing complex, novel, high-risk, or ethically sensitive matters
Advising on removal-defense strategy and EOIR practice
Supporting asylum, humanitarian protection, detention, bond, motions, and appellate matters
Providing mentorship and professional development
Reviewing legal-service policies, workflows, forms, and practice standards
Supporting legal quality assurance across URDP's immigration program
Coordinating with URDP's network of Technical Legal Assistance Attorneys when specialized expertise is needed
The Supervising Attorney is not expected to personally handle every case, review every routine filing, or serve as attorney of record in every matter unless separately agreed or professionally appropriate. The role is to establish and maintain a strong supervisory framework, with direct attorney involvement focused on complex, high-risk, or escalated matters.
The objective is to establish a professional supervisory framework that allows appropriately authorized representatives to operate responsibly while ensuring that complex or escalated matters receive attorney-level oversight.
Two Ways Attorneys Can Contribute
URDP recognizes that attorneys have different levels of availability and professional capacity.
Program-Wide Supervising Attorney
This attorney provides professional legal and ethical supervision across URDP's immigration legal-services program and helps establish the supervisory structure within which the program operates.
Technical Legal Assistance Attorney
Attorneys who are unable or do not wish to assume program-wide supervisory responsibility may instead participate through URDP's Technical Legal Assistance and Consultation Network.
These attorneys may contribute through defined, limited-scope roles such as:
Removal-defense consultation
Asylum and humanitarian protection
Immigration detention and bond
Motions to reopen and reconsider
BIA appeals
Family-based immigration
Complex legal research
Review of particular legal issues or filings
Mentorship and training
Subject-matter consultation
Technical Legal Assistance Attorneys do not assume responsibility for URDP's entire legal-services program.
This distributed structure allows attorneys to contribute their expertise where it can have the greatest impact while maintaining clearly defined professional roles.
Who We Are Looking For
We are particularly interested in attorneys with experience involving:
EOIR removal defense • defensive asylum • immigration detention • bond proceedings • motions to reopen • BIA appeals • nonprofit immigration legal services • DOJ Recognition & Accreditation Programs • Supervision or mentorship of legal advocates
Experience supervising accredited representatives, law students, fellows, or other immigration advocates is especially valuable.
