About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
Full time • 5+ years experience
Diaz Trade Law is hiring a senior customs and international trade attorney with at least five years of direct experience in import, export, AD/CVD, trade litigation, IPR, or FDA-regulated trade work. This is not a document-review seat. We want an attorney who is already excellent, wants to become the go-to lawyer for importers facing serious trade problems, and would rather be trusted than supervised.
Who we are
Diaz Trade Law is a boutique U.S. Customs and International Trade enforcement law firm with offices in Miami and Washington, DC. We represent clients from family-owned importers to Fortune 500 companies before CBP, Commerce, the ITC, FDA, OFAC, BIS, and the Court of International Trade. Our President is Board-Certified in International Law and ranked by Chambers USA in International Trade: Customs (Nationwide). We are in our biggest growth year to date, and we are hiring people who can carry that growth, not just watch it.
The Job, in Plain Terms
You will own matters. You will talk to clients directly, from the first call through the result. Depending on your background, your docket will include some mix of the following:
CBP enforcement: seizures, penalties, audits, prior disclosures, protests, and rulings
Antidumping and countervailing duty proceedings, scope and circumvention inquiries, and related litigation
Civil litigation before the Court of International Trade and federal district courts
Export controls and sanctions (EAR, ITAR, OFAC), including voluntary self-disclosures
Intellectual property enforcement at the border: recordation, exclusion orders, and seizure defense
FDA import compliance: detentions, refusals, import alerts, registrations, and labeling
Forced labor and UFLPA detentions, supply chain tracing, and prevention counseling
Trade remedy and evasion matters, including EAPA investigations and circumvention inquiries
You will also write. Our attorneys publish, speak, and teach, and we will put you in front of audiences from day one.
Who we Want
JD from an ABA-accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing
5+ years of direct customs, trade remedy, export controls, IPR, FDA, or trade litigation experience (law firm, government, or in-house)
Former CBP, Commerce, ITC, DOJ, or FDA attorneys are strongly encouraged to apply
Comfortable in front of clients, agencies, and judges without a partner in the room
A portable book of business is a plus, not a requirement. What is required is the ability to build one.
Spanish fluency is a plus given our Latin American client base
Be a team player. We mean it. It is on our careers page seven times for a reason.
Miami and Washington, D.C. are home base, and that is where we want you. For the right attorney with the right experience, permanent remote work is on the table.
How We Actually Work
These are taken directly from our President’s handwritten notes on what this firm is and is not. They are not marketing copy.
We are not nitpicky. We hold an excellence standard. Those are two different things. We do not red-line commas for sport. We do expect the work to be right, and we expect you to care that it is.
We don’t create fire drills out of laziness. Urgency at this firm comes from clients and deadlines, not from someone failing to plan. If you have worked somewhere that manufactured emergencies, you will notice the difference within a week.
Feedback is fair, critical, and not personal. You will hear what you did well and what you did not, directly, from people who want you to succeed. We invest that effort because we expect you to be here for a long time.
Continuous learning is the job.Trade law changes monthly. We teach, we publish, we take CLE seriously, and we expect you to keep getting better.
No bureaucracy. Big on efficiency. We are paperless and we use technology aggressively. We do not form committees to make decisions. If something is slowing you down, you say so and we fix it.
Once you have an offer, you are in the circle. New hires are immediately part of the team, in the room, and trusted.
We want every team member to succeed. That is the whole strategy. There is no version of this firm winning while its people lose.
Ice cream parties. Team dog encouraged. We are serious about the work and not serious about ourselves.
Where This Firm is Going: The 2031 Plan
Diaz Trade Law has a five-year plan, and this hire is the first move in it. By 2031 we intend to be internationally recognized as the place importers go when the government comes for them, with a brand that stands on its own.
What that means for you: If you want to build a practice with your name on it inside a firm that is growing on purpose, this is the seat.
Compensation and Benefits
Competitive base salary commensurate with experience, performance-based bonus, origination credit on business you bring in, and generous benefits. Details discussed at the offer stage.
