Director - Storage Engineering

Our client, a market leader in its sector, is seeking a senior hands-on Storage Engineer to own the engineering strategy, roadmap and architecture for its enterprise storage and backup platforms globally. This is a technical specialist leadership role — not a large team-management position — front-ending the storage platform and driving a growing on-premise and cloud estate. It offers the opportunity to shape a greenfield cloud storage and backup journey and put your mark on an evolving, high-impact environment.
Some of the key responsibilities will include:
Define and drive the storage and backup engineering roadmap and strategy — evaluating new features, products and technologies for the global estate.
Lead product evaluation, RFPs and platform migrations — POCs, benchmarking, scoring and data-driven recommendations across storage and backup vendors.
Own architecture and design of large-scale enterprise storage — capacity, performance, high-availability and disaster recovery across on-premise and cloud.
Drive automation and DevOps across the platform — tooling, self-service provisioning, metrics gathering, dashboarding and reporting.
Act as the engineering bridge between the managed-service vendor, operations and application teams, translating requirements into platform capabilities and technical governance.
To be eligible for this role you will require:
Extensive hands-on experience in enterprise storage engineering as your primary discipline — not storage as one part of a broader infrastructure remit.
Deep expertise across SAN, NAS and object storage and storage protocols, with strong exposure to a major enterprise storage platform.
Demonstrable automation capability — real scripting/programming (Python, Ansible, Terraform) and complex, production-grade automation, plus dashboarding and visualisation.
A proven track record of architecture, design and product evaluation in large-scale environments, ideally within a managed-service model.
Cloud storage and backup experience on AWS native services; enterprise backup platform knowledge (e.g. NetBackup and cloud backup) an advantage.
