Wholesale Credit Risk – Associate

As a Wholesale Credit Risk Associate, you will assess exposures arising from lending, trading, structured financing, payments and cash management, securities and custody services for financial institution and corporate groups in Japan. Working with bankers, product teams, Legal, and Risk partners, you will develop credit views, recommend appropriate structures and risk mitigants, and coordinate transaction and portfolio requests through approval and execution.
The role provides exposure to complex financial products and senior decision-makers, with opportunities to learn from experienced credit professionals, broaden your credit perspective, and deepen your understanding of financial products and covered industries.
Job Responsibilities
Conduct due diligence, including client discussions, and perform financial, sector, and macroeconomic analysis to develop well-supported credit views.
Prepare clear credit memoranda and portfolio reviews covering key risks, mitigants, ratings, limits, and recommendations.
Assess transaction structures and related credit exposures, and recommend appropriate risk parameters and mitigants.
Manage transaction and portfolio requests by independently assessing risks and mitigants, recommending a credit position to relevant approvers, and coordinating documentation, execution, and escalation.
Support the development of junior team members through knowledge sharing and guidance.
Monitor exposures, limits, breaches, credit quality, and emerging risks, and provide timely portfolio insights and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
Support regulatory engagements in line with applicable local requirements.
Use technology, including AI tools where appropriate, to improve the efficiency and quality of credit analysis and related workflows.
Required Qualifications, Capabilities and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting, business, or a related field.
Professional proficiency in Japanese and English for client and senior-level discussions, stakeholder communications, and comprehension of regulatory, financial, and legal materials.
Strong credit and financial-analysis skills, with the ability to identify key risks and mitigants and develop well-supported recommendations.
Experience preparing clear credit memoranda, portfolio reviews, or comparable materials for senior review.
Ability to manage complex requests independently, anticipate key issues, and escalate matters appropriately.
Ability to communicate clear, audience-appropriate recommendations and work effectively across functions.
Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities and Skills
Relevant experience in credit risk, corporate or commercial banking, leveraged or structured finance, counterparty risk, or a related financial-services role, ideally three years or more.
Experience with Japan-based financial institution or corporate groups and knowledge of relevant lending, trading, structured financing, payments, or custody products.
