Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Micro Focus COBOL Developer to join our application development team. The ideal candidate will be proficient in developing, enhancing, and maintaining mission-critical business applications using Micro Focus COBOL, with specific expertise in COBOL 6.4. This role requires a strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, excellent problem-solving abilities, and the ability to collaborate in a fast-paced environment to deliver reliable, high-performance solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, debug, and maintain complex COBOL applications using Micro Focus COBOL 6.4.
Analyze existing COBOL programs to identify areas for optimization, modernization, or defect resolution.
Collaborate with business analysts, solution architects, and other developers to translate business requirements into technical specifications and deliver effective software solutions.
Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, design, coding, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.
Conduct thorough unit testing, integration testing, and support user acceptance testing (UAT) to ensure high-quality deliverables.
Troubleshoot and resolve production incidents and issues efficiently, providing timely support for critical systems.
Perform code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards, best practices, and performance guidelines for COBOL 6.4.
Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including design specifications, program flows, and operational procedures.
Contribute to the ongoing evolution and modernization strategy for legacy COBOL systems, exploring opportunities for re-platforming or integration with newer technologies.
Mentor junior developers and share knowledge within the team.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years of progressive experience in COBOL application development.
Demonstrated expert-level proficiency in Micro Focus COBOL, specifically version 6.4.
Extensive experience with Micro Focus development tools and environments, such as Micro Focus Visual COBOL, Enterprise Developer, and Enterprise Server.
Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL, with experience in DB2, SQL Server, Oracle, or similar platforms.
Experience with version control systems such as Git, SVN, or TFS.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills with a keen eye for detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
