Product Engineer (Fullstack)

Position Overview
The Product Engineer (Fullstack) is responsible for building and shipping the features that power Odie's pet insurance product, working across the full stack from database to interface. This role sits with Product while problems are still being defined, helping determine what's worth building and how best to get there.
The Product Engineer partners closely with Product and collaborates across Engineering to scope solutions, surface risks and tradeoffs early, and ship working software that can be tested and iterated on quickly.
Success in this role requires strong TypeScript/Node.js and React fundamentals, a genuine interest in being part of the product development process, comfort communicating across teams, and the judgment to flag problems — and propose alternatives — before they become expensive.

Primary Ownership
The Product Engineer (Fullstack) is the designated owner of:
Feature delivery from API to interface for assigned product initiatives
Technical scoping and tradeoff recommendations during early problem definition
Third-party integration reliability
Observability and monitoring for shipped features
Code quality through collaborative review
Ownership means seeing a problem through from ideation to a tested, working solution — flagging risks early, instrumenting what ships, and following up until it's confirmed to be working as intended.
Key ResponsibilitiesProduct & Technical Scoping
Partner with Product while problems are still being defined to help determine how best to bring feature requests to life.
Propose scoped alternatives and testable versions of a solution (for example, a version that can be tested within days rather than weeks).
Identify collisions with existing systems or workflows and recommend alternative approaches.
Bring a recommendation, not just a flag, when something looks wrong.
Full-Stack Development
Build features end-to-end, from database and API design through the React interface.
Work from Figma files and product direction without needing every state fully specified.
Build UI that holds up on mobile as well as desktop.
Write and maintain strong SQL and relational data models against our MySQL database.
Integrations & Reliability
Build and maintain third-party integrations, including the unglamorous parts: retries, idempotency, webhooks, and reconciliation.
Instrument what you ship so degradations are caught before customers notice.
Use AI tools to improve day-to-day development and explore new approaches without compromising quality.
Success Metrics
Performance may be evaluated based on, including but not limited to:
Quality and reliability of shipped integrations
Time to detect and respond to degradations (observability)
Code review turnaround and quality
Accuracy of scoping estimates
Measurable impact of shipped features on business metrics
Feedback from Product partners and peers
QualificationsRequired
4+ years building in TypeScript / Node.js.
Strong SQL and relational data modeling experience (MySQL).
Solid React experience, including taking a feature from API to interface independently.
Ability to work from a Figma file without needing every state specified.
Real third-party integration experience, including retries, idempotency, webhooks, and reconciliation.
A habit of instrumenting shipped work and monitoring for degradation.
Experience with Git and collaborative code review.
Preferred
Experience incorporating AI tools into day-to-day development.
Curiosity about the insurance domain (prior insurance experience not required).
Experience working in collaborative, fast-moving product environments.
