About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer to join our remote team, working within US time zones. This role is pivotal in developing and maintaining our API-driven marketplace products, which are built to be scalable, secure, and reliable. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing backend services that form the backbone of our platform. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including product managers, frontend developers, and other engineers to deliver high-quality features rapidly and efficiently.
This position is initially a contract-to-hire engagement, allowing both parties to evaluate fit and collaboration before transitioning to a full-time role. The ideal candidate will be someone who takes ownership of features from conception through deployment, demonstrating independence, reliability, and a strong commitment to code quality. Your expertise will help us accelerate our development cycles and improve our platform's robustness, especially as we incorporate AI-powered development tools into our workflow.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess over five years of professional experience in backend engineering, with a proven track record of delivering production-ready systems. You should be highly proficient in Python, with substantial experience working with modern API frameworks such as FastAPI or similar. Strong knowledge of designing and building RESTful APIs and backend services is essential. You must have excellent skills in PostgreSQL or comparable relational databases, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning.
Hands-on experience deploying and managing services on AWS is required, including familiarity with containers like Docker and CI/CD pipelines. Experience in integrating third-party APIs and building fault-tolerant systems is highly valued. You should demonstrate solid testing practices and a pragmatic approach to shipping reliable, high-quality code. Additionally, you should be comfortable working independently, communicating clearly, and meeting commitments. A passion for AI tools and a proactive attitude towards leveraging these technologies in your workflow are highly desirable.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain scalable and secure backend services and REST APIs that support our marketplace products. Take ownership of features from initial design through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing monitoring in production environments. Optimize our PostgreSQL data layer through schema design, indexing, and query performance tuning to ensure efficient data handling. Integrate seamlessly with third-party APIs and internal services, prioritizing reliability and clean error handling to maintain system robustness.
Contribute to automated testing efforts to uphold high standards of code quality and reliability. Deploy and operate services within cloud environments, primarily AWS, utilizing containers (Docker) and CI/CD pipelines for continuous integration and delivery. Implement basic observability practices, including logging, metrics, and alerting, to monitor system health. Collaborate closely with product managers, frontend engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver features swiftly and iterate based on user feedback. Utilize AI-powered development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Copilot to accelerate development cycles and enhance code quality while maintaining a focus on best practices and technical excellence.
