Role Description The USRN Coder – Mainland License is a full-time remote role responsible for accurately reviewing and coding medical records based on established clinical documentation and coding standards. Day-to-day duties include analyzing patient charts, assigning appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes, and ensuring compliance with relevant coding guidelines and payer requirements. The role involves collaborating with clinical teams and billing staff to clarify documentation, reduce coding errors, and support accurate claims submission and reimbursement. The USRN Coder will also help identify documentation improvement opportunities, maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding rules and regulatory changes, and consistently meet productivity and quality targets in a remote work environment.
Qualifications
Strong clinical background as a US-licensed Registered Nurse (USRN) with an active mainland license and experience in direct patient care or clinical review.
Proficiency in medical coding practices, including accurate application of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes, and familiarity with payer-specific rules and guidelines.
Ability to interpret medical records and clinical documentation, identify missing or unclear information, and collaborate with providers or teams to resolve discrepancies.
Experience with electronic health records (EHR) or EMR systems and coding/billing software, with strong attention to detail and data accuracy.
Solid understanding of healthcare compliance, documentation standards, and quality assurance practices related to coding and reimbursement.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and meet remote productivity and quality targets.
Relevant certification such as CPC, CCS, or equivalent coding credentials is preferred; ongoing commitment to continuing education in coding and clinical standards is beneficial.
Prior experience in remote or distributed healthcare roles, and comfort working with secure digital tools and maintaining confidentiality of patient information.
