About BetterBrain
BetterBrain Health is an AI-native health company on a mission to defeat dementia and empower people to achieve the strongest brain health possible. We pair world-class AI with human coaches and clinicians to deliver personalized, convenient insight, coaching, and care. We market directly to consumers but also work with, and through, institutions. Our leadership team has built and exited from multiple billion-dollar companies.
We are well-capitalized, growing rapidly, and operating across multiple business lines: consumer coaching, insurance-covered services, diagnostics and lab testing, e-commerce, subscriptions, and provider-based care. That growth is exactly why we are hiring our first dedicated finance and accounting leader.
Why this role, why now
This is a founding controller seat. The books are kept today by an outsourced accounting firm that will remain in place, and the bookkeeping itself is not complex. What we do not have is an owner: one person accountable for accurate, GAAP, audit-ready financials across a multi-entity structure, and for building the processes, controls, and documentation that a company our size needs before it can scale.
This is not a seat where you inherit a holistic finance function and improve it. Much of what you will need does not exist yet. You will be writing the close calendar, the reconciliation standards, the approval workflows, and the standard operating procedures that let this function run smoothly. If building from a blank page energizes you, this is an unusually good seat. If you do your best work inside an established structure, this is likely not the right fit.
Reporting to the CFO, you will partner directly with our core leaders and their product, marketing, and engineering teams. BetterBrain is an early-stage company, which means we work hard and move fast. We collaborate as owners, not as cogs in the wheel.
What the seat is, in priority order
● Controller first. Accurate, timely, audit-ready books are priority one. Owning the monthly close across all entities, exercising GAAP judgment, and reconciling our operating systems to the general ledger is the core of the job and the majority of the work in year one.
● Builder throughout. Standing up the processes, controls, and documentation that do not exist yet. This runs alongside the close rather than after it.
● Finance partner second. Budgeting, unit economics, cash forecasting, and board and investor reporting, growing as the function stabilizes.
● Office of the CFO third. Managing outsourced providers, entity and state registrations, payroll accounting, insurance renewals, and audit coordination.
What you will own
Monthly close and financial reporting
Own the monthly close across all entities, including coordination with the outsourced accounting firm, review of workpapers, reconciliation of key accounts, and preparation of timely financial statements.
Process build and standard operating procedures
Design and document how finance runs. This includes the close calendar with day assignments and dependencies, close checklists with preparer and reviewer sign-off, the balance sheet account reconciliation binder, approval and expense workflows, and a written SOP for every recurring process you own. We expect documentation to be a deliverable of the work, not an afterthought, so that the function is transferable and audit-ready by design.
Multi-entity and intercompany accounting
Maintain clean accounting across the parent company and affiliated entities, including intercompany charges, management-services fees, consolidations, and the documentation that supports them. Our management company and various clinical practices are deliberately separate.
Revenue recognition
Develop, document, and consistently apply a revenue recognition approach across business lines that most finance leaders have not seen together: insurance-billed clinical services, prepaid direct-to-consumer services recognized on delivery, lab testing, subscriptions, and a physical product line carrying inventory and third-party fulfillment.
Accounting operations and systems
Own the data flows from our operating systems into the general ledger, the subledger-to-GL reconciliations, and the integrity of what lands in the books. Help lead the eventual transition to a true ERP.
Treasury, cash management, and forecasting
Monitor cash across entities, manage bank accounts and transfers, support intercompany funding, and maintain a short-term cash forecast giving leadership clear visibility into liquidity.
Planning, analysis, and management reporting
Support budgeting, forecasting, and actuals-to-plan analysis, and build reporting that shows performance by product, channel, and business line, including margin and unit economics.
Office of the CFO
Payroll coordination and related accounting; benefits and employee administration support; entity maintenance, state registrations, foreign qualifications, and tax registrations; coordination with outside counsel and tax advisors; business insurance renewals; audit readiness and eventual coordination with independent auditors.
Tools and systems
Our accounting runs on QuickBooks today, supported by an outsourced firm that will remain in place. The sophistication lives in our self-developed tech stack, built for the demands of a modern healthcare company. A meaningful part of this role is connecting that operating data to the financial records and building reporting on top of it. We are an AI-native company and expect finance to use modern AI tools in actual work, not just to talk about them.
What success looks like in the first year
● A close calendar exists, is followed, and the close lands reliably and on time across all entities.
● Every material balance sheet account is reconciled monthly to support, with documented review.
● A written SOP exists for each recurring processes, current enough that someone else could run it.
● Entity-level and consolidated reporting is clean, and intercompany ties out without manual rework.
● Revenue recognition is documented and applied consistently across every business line.
● Leadership has reliable visibility into cash, burn, runway, and unit economics.
● The company is audit-ready rather than audit-scrambling.
Required experience
We care more about demonstrated ownership than pedigree. The right candidate will have:
● Direct ownership of a monthly close. You have been the person accountable for the numbers being right and on time.
● Demonstrated build-from-scratch experience. Specific processes, controls, or systems you personally designed and implemented where none existed. Be prepared to name them and walk through how you did it.
● Written process documentation. A track record of producing SOPs, close checklists, or accounting policy memos that others actually used.
● Multi-entity accounting, including intercompany accounting and consolidation.
● A strong accounting foundation, with a CPA or equivalent depth of technical judgment.
● Working comfort in the general ledger and in spreadsheets. This is a hands-on seat with no team beneath you at the start.
● Self-direction. You set your own priorities, raise your hand early when something is stuck, and do not need close management to make progress.
● Judgment, including recognizing when an issue needs to be escalated.
Especially valuable
● Healthcare, provider, MSO, professional corporation, or revenue-cycle accounting.
● Early-stage or startup experience, particularly as a first or founding finance hire.
● E-commerce, inventory, subscription, or marketplace accounting.
● ERP selection or implementation, and subledger-to-GL reconciliation design.
● Audit readiness or first-audit experience.
This role is probably not the right fit if
● You are strongest optimizing an existing finance function and prefer established structure.
● Your interest is primari
