About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

Red Sky Health - Product Manager / Business Systems Analyst
Red Sky Health was formed by healthcare and technology startup veterans with a mission to ensure that healthcare providers are properly paid for their services. The first step in our mission is to make sure that health insurance claims denials are rapidly and comprehensively resubmitted and paid.
We are seeking a Product Manager / Business Systems Analyst to join our team and own product areas end to end — from understanding what the business and our customers need, through translating that into specs and engineering-ready work, through shipping and validating it. You will be the connective tissue across three distinct engineering groups:
UI / Web Application — the interface billers, AR reps, and revenue cycle leaders work in every day
AI — the models and agentic reasoning layer that drives denial recommendations, eligibility inquiry, and automated resubmission
Analytics — reporting for internal business operations and customer-facing reporting
Each of these groups takes work in differently, on different cadences, with different definitions of “done.” Part of the job is knowing which pipeline a given piece of work belongs in, and making sure a feature that spans all three doesn’t fall apart at the seams.
This is a hybrid product and business systems analyst role. At our size, the person who decides what to build is also the person who documents how the system behaves today, maps the data, writes the requirements at field-level detail, and validates that what shipped actually works. If you want to hand off a one-paragraph problem statement and walk away, this isn’t the right fit. If you like being the person who genuinely understands how the system works end to end — the workflows, the data, the edge cases, the exceptions — this role gives you that.
If you thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, enjoy solving complex problems, and want to make a real impact in the healthcare industry, we would love to hear from you!
Responsibilities:
Own and drive the backlog
Maintain a prioritized backlog across multiple concurrent product areas.
Make and defend prioritization calls — new capability vs. bug fix vs. platform work vs. customer commitment.
Keep the backlog honest: groomed, sequenced, and reflective of what’s being built next.
Translate business needs into engineering work
Turn business logic into clear specs — denial rules, claim state transitions, eligibility logic, resubmission criteria — with unambiguous acceptance criteria.
Write specs engineers can build from without a follow-up meeting, and that QA can test against.
Understand the difference between “what the business asked for” and “what the business needs,” and drive to the second one.
Do the systems analysis
Elicit and document requirements at the level of detail engineering can build from — field-level behavior, validation rules, state transitions, error handling, permissions.
Document current-state and future-state workflows: how a claim moves through the system today, how it should move, and what changes in between.
Perform data mapping and gap analysis — source fields to platform fields, EDI segments to displayed values, PMS/clearinghouse data to internal models.
Trace and document existing system behavior when nobody remembers exactly how something works. Read the data, read the payloads, figure it out.
Write test cases and acceptance criteria, and participate in UAT before release.
Investigate production issues: reproduce them, isolate whether it’s data, integration, model behavior, or application logic, and write bug cards specific enough that engineering doesn’t have to re-diagnose from scratch.
Document configuration and business rules so they’re knowable to people outside the original conversation.
Support integration and implementation work — analyze what a new PMS or EMR connection requires, where data will be missing, and what the workarounds cost.
Understand the market and the competition
Perform ongoing market and competitive analysis in the revenue cycle management and denial management space.
Track what competitors ship, where they’re strong, and where the gaps are.
Bring a point of view on positioning and differentiation, not just a feature matrix.
Understand how the product is used
Dig into product usage data to find where users get stuck, what goes unused, and where the workflow fights the user.
Sit with billers and AR staff and watch them work.
Parse and synthesize user and customer feedback — support tickets, implementation notes, beta client conversations, internal ops feedback — into a clear read on what’s high priority and what isn’t.
Run the working sessions
Schedule, prepare for, participate in, and lead working sessions that move feature sets from idea to spec to build.
Drive to decisions, capture them, and follow through on handoff to engineering.
Keep design, engineering, AI, analytics, operations, and leadership aligned on what’s being built and why.
Close the loop
Define what success looks like before launch, then verify it after.
Own the feedback loop from production behavior back into the backlog.
Escalate the things that need escalating, quickly.
Qualifications:
3+ years of experience in product management, business systems analysis, or a blend of the two.
Demonstrated ability to manage a real backlog under real competing pressure — not just maintain a ticket queue.
Strong written communication. This role produces specs, and the specs must be good.
Comfort translating messy, conditional business logic into structured requirements.
Genuine willingness to work at field-level and data-level detail — this role involves as much documentation, mapping, and investigation as it does strategy.
Ability to work directly with engineers on technical trade-offs without needing everything abstracted for you.
Process and workflow documentation skills — you can produce a current-state map of a system nobody has fully written down.
Facilitation skills — you can run a room with strong opinions in it and come out with a decision.
Data literacy: you can interrogate usage data and reporting output yourself rather than waiting for someone to summarize it.
Comfort with ambiguity, shifting priorities, and the pace of a company that’s still defining its category.
Judgment about scope. Knowing what to cut is as important as knowing what to build.
Preferred Skills:
Domain
Experience with practice management systems (PMS), EMRs, and EHRs.
Understanding of the claim and denial lifecycle end to end — submission, adjudication, remittance, appeal, resubmission.
Familiarity with the payer adjudication process.
Basic understanding of CARC/RARC denial codes and how they map to real remediation paths.
Familiarity with X12 EDI transactions (835, 837, 270/271, 276/277) and clearinghouse behavior.
Revenue cycle management (RCM) experience — provider side, payer side, or vendor side.
Understanding of CPT/HCPCS and ICD-10 diagnosis coding, and where the line sits between automation and required human clinical sign-off.
Familiarity with HL7 / FHIR.
Awareness of HIPAA and PHI handling requirements as product constraints, not just legal checkboxes.
Technical / AI
Experience shipping AI or LLM-backed product features — especially where model output drives a consequential action.
Instincts for human-in-the-loop design: when to automate, when to recommend, when to require review, and how to build the guardrails.
Comfort reading SQL, or willingness to learn it quickly.
Experience with BI/reporting tooling and defining reporting requirements for both internal ops and external customers.
Comfort reading structured payloads directly — EDI files, JSON, API responses — to answer your own questions about system behavior.
Other
Experience in an early-stage or scaling startup.
Experience supporting implementations and beta customers directly.
