Ecommerce Systems Engineer

Summary
Hiya is seeking an Ecommerce Systems Engineer to join our internal technology team. You will build and own internal projects across our Shopify storefront, subscription platform, middleware, and data infrastructure, and coordinate and collaborate with the external agencies we partner with on larger builds. Our systems include Shopify Plus, OrderGroove, Cloudflare Workers, GitHub Actions, Klaviyo, Snowflake, and the connectors behind Hiya's AI-amplified operating model.
This is a mid-level, hands-on engineering role working directly alongside the VP of Technology. We are looking for someone who has shipped and owned production commerce systems, is comfortable in this architecture on day one, can troubleshoot whatever the business throws at technology, and uses AI coding tools as a daily practice rather than a novelty. AI is a multiplier here, not a substitute: you have years of writing code by hand, you read and reason about code you did not write, and you can debug Liquid, JavaScript, or a failing pipeline with the tools turned off. You will also bring engineering discipline and oversight, and raise the bar for the team.
We are looking for a collaborative team member who enjoys troubleshooting complex technical challenges, is excited by new technologies and gets the most out of AI tools, takes ownership of their work, and is self-directed: someone who sees what needs doing and acts on it without waiting to be told. You are comfortable with ambiguity, you write things down so the next person can pick them up, and you can explain a technical trade-off to marketing, finance, or a customer-service lead in plain language.
Key Responsibilities
Storefront & Shopify Engineering
Own the Shopify Plus codebase: Liquid, theme architecture, Shopify Functions, Checkout Extensibility, and the Admin GraphQL API.
Own the storefront deployment pipeline (GitHub Actions, blue/green theme deploys, settings sync) and its secrets, tokens, and access.
Act as the pull-request review gate for agency and contractor work; hold the bar on quality, security, and change control.
Build storefront features and fixes directly when it is faster to do in-house; scope and hand off larger builds to agency partners with clear requirements and acceptance criteria.
Middleware, Integrations & Automation
Build and maintain Cloudflare Workers and serverless services connecting Shopify to OrderGroove (subscriptions), Klaviyo, Flowspace (WMS), and our data warehouse.
Design and debug API integrations (REST and GraphQL), webhooks, and event flows across the stack.
Write the scripts, Shopify Flows, and small internal tools that automate operational work (bulk operations, data fixes, guardrails against bad orders) so routine needs do not wait on an agency queue.
Instrument and monitor integrations so failures surface before customers or finance notice.
AI-Amplified Org Infrastructure
Build and operate the connectors (MCP servers on Cloudflare), data pipelines into Snowflake, and dashboards that give every department AI access to its own data.
Design permission models so shared context is inherited safely per user and department.
Use AI coding assistants daily and help the wider team adopt them well.
Reliability, Troubleshooting & Incident Response
Be the technical first responder for production issues across storefront, subscriptions, fulfillment, and integrations.
Run root-cause investigations using the Admin API, logs, and vendor APIs; document findings and recommend the fix before making it.
Turn incidents into permanent guardrails, runbooks, and monitoring.
Engineering Practice & Governance
Establish and maintain repository standards, CI/CD, code review, and environment hygiene.
Follow and improve change-control and SOX/ITGC practices for code and infrastructure changes; keep secrets and access audit-ready.
Document architecture and decisions so knowledge lives at Hiya, not only with a vendor.
Own the technical relationship with our agency partners day to day: requirements, review, acceptance, and knowledge transfer on everything they ship.
Competencies
Commerce engineering depth: has owned a production Shopify Plus codebase, not just customized one.
Systems fluency: comfortable moving between storefront code, serverless middleware, third-party APIs, and a data warehouse in the same afternoon.
Troubleshooter's method: dig in, reproduce, test, document, recommend. Comfortable with ambiguity and unfamiliar systems.
Fundamentals first: years of hands-on coding before and alongside AI tools. Reads unfamiliar code, reasons about it, and traces a bug through Liquid, JavaScript/TypeScript, SQL, or a GitHub Actions log without an assistant.
AI-native practice: uses AI coding tools daily, knows where they help and where they do not, and verifies what they produce.
Security and access instincts: least privilege, token hygiene, change control by default.
Ownership: takes a problem end to end and closes the loop with stakeholders.
Plain-language communication: explains technical trade-offs to marketing, operations, and finance clearly and without ego.
Teaches as they go: raises the team's engineering bar through review, documentation, and pairing.
Qualifications & Requirements
5 to 8 years of professional software engineering experience, with meaningful time on ecommerce or subscription systems.
Strong, hand-written TypeScript/JavaScript and solid HTML/CSS; hands-on with serverless platforms (Cloudflare Workers preferred, or equivalent) and the Node runtime.
Fluent in the rest of the working stack: Liquid, SQL, GraphQL, JSON/YAML (GitHub Actions and configuration), and Bash/shell. Able to read and debug all of them manually.
Deep Shopify Plus experience at the code level: Liquid, Admin GraphQL API, Shopify Functions and/or Checkout Extensibility, theme deployment pipelines.
Experience building and debugging API integrations and webhooks across SaaS systems.
Working SQL and experience with a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake preferred).
Git, pull-request workflows, and CI/CD (GitHub Actions preferred) as everyday tools.
Daily use of AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar), with the judgment to review, test, and correct their output. Candidates who cannot work without them will not be a fit.
Clear written communication; able to document systems and decisions.
Nice to have
Subscription platforms (OrderGroove, Recharge), WMS/3PL integrations, Klaviyo API.
Python or Node scripting for data and bulk operations; Playwright or similar for end-to-end testing.
Experience with MCP servers or building tooling for LLM-based workflows.
Experience directing or reviewing agency-built codebases.
Familiarity with SOX/ITGC change-control environments.
Education
Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent work experience.
