Our client, a global technology company, is looking for a seasoned CONTRACT eDiscovery & Info Gov Consultant to lead a focused document retention and information governance initiative. This individual will lead the implementation and adoption of the company’s document retention program, transforming existing policies into practical systems, workflows, and processes that can be sustained long term. The ideal candidate will bring substantial in-house experience across eDiscovery, information governance, document retention, legal holds, preservation, defensible disposition, and legal operations, with a demonstrated history of personally implementing retention programs from policy approval through technical execution and employee adoption. Hands-on experience with Slack and Google Workspace, including Gmail, Drive, and Google Vault, is highly preferred. This role will work independently and cross-functionally with Legal, IT, Security, Privacy, People, Finance, vendors, and outside counsel to reconcile legal holds, establish retention controls, improve repositories, coordinate approved legacy cleanup, and create a practical handoff for internal teams. This is a temporary contractor engagement expected to last approximately 4–6 months and can be performed remotely from anywhere in the U.S.
Key Responsibilities
Assess current policies, repositories, preservation practices, and previous project work
Partner with Litigation Counsel and Legal Operations to refine and finalize retention policies across different data sources
Develop appropriate exceptions to established retention periods
Create an implementation plan outlining priorities, owners, dependencies, and required decisions
Reconcile active matters, custodians, data sources, and legal holds
Lead a phased rollout and approved cleanup of legacy information
Confirm legal hold and exception coverage before deletion activities occur
Document approvals, testing, and validation results
Coordinate communications and training so employees understand what information must be retained and where it should be stored
Establish practical operating procedures, ownership responsibilities, and reporting processes
Track implementation progress, legal hold coverage, adoption, and repository improvements
Train internal owners and complete a practical transition and handoff at the conclusion of the engagement
Role Requirements
Substantial in-house experience in eDiscovery, document retention, information governance, litigation, or legal operations, ideally including at least 10 years of in-house experience
Experience within a technology company handling sensitive data and operating with a lean legal team is particularly valuable
Demonstrated experience personally leading an in-house retention program through policy approval, technical implementation, employee adoption, and ongoing operations
Ability to clearly explain individual decisions, deliverables, responsibilities, and measurable results from prior retention initiatives
Hands-on experience with legal holds, defensible disposition, custodian management, preservation, collections, and eDiscovery
Strong understanding of how routine retention, legal preservation requirements, privacy obligations, and business needs intersect
Practical experience managing eDiscovery and retention within collaboration platforms, particularly Slack and Google Workspace, including Gmail, Drive, and Google Vault
Ability to quickly learn unfamiliar platforms and validate system capabilities in partnership with administrators
Experience implementing document and matter repositories that legal teams actively use, including appropriate ownership, permissions, search functionality, and maintenance practices
Ability to independently lead initiatives involving Legal, IT, Security, Privacy, People, Finance, vendors, and outside counsel
Ability to make practical recommendations, obtain necessary decisions, identify and escalate specific blockers, and keep implementation moving forward
