Role Description The Underwriter role at Onyx Processing is a full-time, remote position responsible for evaluating credit and risk profiles for merchants and other business clients. On a day-to-day basis, the Underwriter reviews applications and supporting documentation, analyzes financial statements and transactional behavior, and applies internal policies and regulatory guidelines to make sound approval or decline decisions. The role involves assessing fraud and compliance risks, setting appropriate terms and conditions, and documenting rationale for underwriting decisions in a clear and consistent manner. The Underwriter partners with sales, operations, and risk teams to resolve complex cases, responds to inquiries from internal stakeholders, and helps refine underwriting standards as market and regulatory conditions change. This position requires consistent attention to detail, timely decision-making, and a commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent evaluation process.
Qualifications
Experience in credit, merchant, or commercial underwriting, including risk assessment, financial analysis, and decision-making in a payments or financial services environment.
Strong analytical abilities, with proficiency in reviewing financial statements, transactional data, and documentation to identify trends, inconsistencies, and potential risk factors.
Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to payments and financial services (e.g., KYC, AML, fraud monitoring), and ability to apply policies consistently.
Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation, with strong written and verbal communication skills for explaining decisions to internal teams and maintaining clear records.
Ability to work independently in a remote setting, manage multiple cases and deadlines, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Comfort with using underwriting tools, CRM or case management systems, and standard office software; experience with payment processing platforms is a plus.
Prior experience in fintech, banking, or merchant acquiring is beneficial, along with a background in finance, business, economics, or a related discipline.
Demonstrated commitment to non-discriminatory, objective evaluation practices and a customer-focused approach to balancing risk and business growth.
