Job Title: Creative Director
Reports To: Director of Product Development
Status: Full Time, Remote (contract-to-hire considered for the right candidate)
SUMMARY
The Creative Director owns the art for Renegade’s trading card game lines. This role drives art production end to end: establishing the visual direction with the producer and licensor, building and contracting the artist roster, commissioning and directing every piece from brief through final, and trafficking approvals so art lands on schedule and on budget. The Creative Director also supports graphic design on card frames, foil and special treatments and packaging. This position works closely with the product producer, publisher, designers, graphic designers, operations, and licensors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leads art direction for card game products: develops the style guide and visual bible with the producer and licensor, and holds every piece to it.
Builds, maintains, and expands the roster of freelance illustrators and studios; matches artists to cards by subject, style, budget, and schedule.
Commissions all card, key, and packaging art: reviews art briefs, supports production and operations on rates and contracts, and manages sketch, revision, and final-delivery cycles for several hundred pieces per set.
Traffics and tracks art approvals internally and with the licensor; anticipates licensor requirements and keeps a clean record of approvals, revisions, and usage rights.
Aligns with the producer and then helps manage the art budget and schedule for each set with operations; flags risk early and rebalances assignments to protect deadlines.
Owns and executes graphic design on card frames, rarity and foil treatments, alternate-art and promo variants, and pre-press requirements for TCG print (foil stamping, special finishes, collation).
Takes on graphic design work for card game products and marketing.
Ensures every asset complies with Renegade’s no-generative-AI policy and that artist contracts and deliverables reflect it.
Maintains familiarity with the TCG marketplace and competitive art standards, and works to exceed player and collector expectations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Deep knowledge of trading card game art: how card art reads at print size, frame and text-box constraints, rarity and foil treatments, and what collectors respond to.
An established, current network of illustrators and studios working in TCGs, RPGs, and fantasy/sci-fi genre art.
Ability to direct a high volume of pieces at once and keep quality consistent across many hands under aggressive deadlines.
Excellent written art briefs and feedback; can elucidate a concept quickly and concisely to artists, producers, and business partners.
Strong contracting and negotiation skills with freelancers; comfortable managing budgets and rights.
Skilled in the Adobe Creative Suite; able to make quick image edits and mock-ups in production.
Strong leadership, interpersonal, problem-solving, and relationship-building abilities; professional demeanor and team-player orientation.
Can perform duties under minimal supervision while exercising discretion and independent judgment.
INTERACTION
This position interacts closely with the product producer, publisher, game designers, operations and production, marketing, and licensors.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises external illustrators and art studios assigned to card game projects.
EDUCATION / YEARS EXPERIENCE
Art or Graphic Design degree, or equivalent experience.
3+ years of art direction on a trading card game or comparable card-based product, commissioning and directing large volumes of illustration.
Demonstrated artist network: able to staff a set of 300+ pieces from existing relationships.
Experience with licensed brands and licensor approval processes strongly preferred.
Experience with foil and special-treatment card production a plus.
Graphic design experience on tabletop products.
Experience working with overseas printers and partners a plus.
