Join Our Fleet Operations Team
Smiths is looking for a reliable and hardworking Workshop Operative to support the safe, efficient and compliant operation of our fleet. This is a varied, hands-on role that combines workshop and yard responsibilities, assisting with helping to ensure our vehicles remain roadworthy, well-presented and available for operational use.
Working closely with our fleet and workshop teams, you'll play an important role in maintaining high standards of safety, housekeeping and fleet presentation across our business.
What You'll Be Doing
Washing and cleaning HGVs, trailers and fleet vehicles to company standards.
Carrying out routine greasing, lubrication and basic maintenance tasks.
Preparing vehicles for brake testing and, following training, conducting brake tests independently.
Assisting with day-to-day workshop activities to support fleet maintenance and vehicle availability.
Maintaining clean, organised and safe workshop, warehouse and yard areas.
Inspecting tools and equipment before use and reporting any defects.
Supporting the movement of vehicles between company sites and external locations.
Operating forklifts, telehandlers and other equipment where trained and authorised.
Completing relevant records and documentation accurately.
Adhering to all Health & Safety, environmental and company procedures.
What We're Looking ForEssential
Full UK Driving Licence with a clean driving record.
Experience working within a workshop, transport, fleet, warehouse, construction or similar operational environment.
Good practical and mechanical aptitude.
Knowledge of safe working practices and Health & Safety requirements.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Experience carrying out vehicle inspections, cleaning or basic maintenance tasks.
Desirable
HGV Licence.
Forklift Truck Licence.
Telehandler/Loadall Licence.
Experience working with commercial vehicles or HGV fleets.
Familiarity with brake testing equipment and procedures.
Mechanical maintenance experience.
