Automation Engineer – PLC, Robotics & Vision

The Role
Machinelab is looking for a practical Automation Engineer to design, programme and commission automated systems for customers across GMP-regulated industries, medical device, food and
FMCG.
This is a hands-on technical role involving PLC programming, robotics integration, machine commissioning and customer support, taking projects from initial development through FAT, installation
and SAT.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement machine-control logic and automation sequences.
- Programme PLC systems across platforms such as Beckhoff/TwinCAT, Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens and Schneider Electric.
- Programme and integrate industrial robots.
- Develop HMIs and machine-control interfaces.
- Integrate robotics, servo and motion systems, machine vision and other automation equipment.
- Translate customer URS and functional requirements into practical control-system solutions.
- Commission and optimise machinery during internal testing, FAT, installation and SAT.
- Troubleshoot controls, software and system-integration issues.
- Optimise machine cycle times, reliability and performance.
- Work closely with our mechanical, electrical and project engineering teams.
- Support installation and commissioning at customer sites.
- Help develop reusable PLC code, function blocks and software standards.
Experience & Skills
We are looking for someone with:
- Practical PLC programming experience.
- Experience with automated machinery and system integration.
- Good debugging, fault-finding and commissioning ability.
- HMI development experience.
- The ability to interpret customer requirements and functional specifications.
- A practical, hands-on approach to machine building and commissioning.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
- A full driving licence.
- A willingness to travel to customer sites when required.
Experience in any of the following would also be beneficial:
- Beckhoff/TwinCAT.
- Allen-Bradley/Rockwell.
- Siemens or Schneider PLCs.
- Industrial robotics.
- Servo and motion control.
- Cognex, Keyence or other machine-vision systems.
- Electrical controls and design.
- Pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostics, food or other regulated manufacturing environments.

Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Packaging Engineer to support medical device packaging design, development, testing, validation, and
design control activities. The role will support new product development, product transfers, packaging design changes, and
regulatory submissions within multidisciplinary project teams.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and develop medical device packaging solutions.
• Lead packaging activities for new product development, product transfers, and design changes.
• Develop prototype packaging models to evaluate design concepts.
• Plan, execute, and own packaging testing and validation activities.
• Develop test protocols, validation protocols, reports, and technical documentation.
• Lead packaging evaluations with internal and external stakeholders.
• Lead packaging-related Design Control documentation.
• Support documentation required for regulatory submissions.
• Manage technically complex packaging projects, milestones, risks, and timelines.
• Perform engineering evaluations involving drawings, dimensions, tolerance stack-ups, and specifications.
• Analyze validation and test data using statistical tools and draw appropriate conclusions.
• Identify technical risks and develop appropriate packaging solutions.
• Collaborate with R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Operations, Supply Chain, and suppliers.
Technical Skills
• Medical device packaging design and development.

• Knowledge of FDA and EU MDR packaging requirements.

• Design Controls and regulatory documentation.
• Engineering drawings, GD&T, dimensional tolerances, and tolerance stack-ups.

• Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or a related Engineering discipline.
• 3–5 years of relevant packaging engineering experience, preferably within the medical device or regulated healthcare industry.
• Hands-on experience in packaging development, testing, validation, design changes, and/or product transfers preferred.
