About The Role

We’re looking for a Full-Stack Engineer who lives in Berlin, ships end-to-end features with strong judgment, learns fast, and cares about educators and learners, including practical LLM features when they help the product.

🚀 About the role
You will work across our stack, from the Next.js frontend to backend services, APIs, and deployment workflows. You’ll join a small, cross-functional team that optimizes for ownership, trust, and high-quality collaboration over heavy processes.
In addition to shipping core product features, you will partner with product & learning design to ship features that improve the learning platform, sometimes with LLMs, always with clear UX, reliability, and human review where it matters.
We work remotely with regular opportunities to travel and meet as a team, balancing flexibility with strong collaboration rituals. You must live in Berlin; residency is required, while day-to-day work remains fully remote. 🌍
💻 What you’ll do
Build and iterate on full-stack features for our learning platform, directly shaping how staff and learners use challenges, milestones, and AI-assisted workflows.
Develop and maintain our Next.js application and related frontend components.
Implement and improve backend services, APIs, and data flows using MongoDB.
When we use AI, help design simple, safe product loops — prompt → structured output → human review → save — pragmatic rather than research-heavy. 🤖
Collaborate with product, design, QA, engineering, and academic stakeholders in a low-ego environment that values trust, ownership, and clear communication. 🤝
Bring product sense into engineering discussions — question scope, propose simpler paths, and care about the user journey as much as the implementation.
✨ What you bring
Experience shipping web product features end-to-end. Portfolio or side projects are welcome if your motivation and judgment are clear. We care more about ramp speed and ownership than a seniority label.
Comfortable with TypeScript and modern React; Next.js experience is preferred, but willingness to ramp fast matters more than years of Next.js experience.
Practical experience with MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases, or the clear ability to learn our data model quickly.
Curiosity about LLMs and good judgment around AI — prior experience shipping LLM features is a plus, not a gate.
A product mindset: you care about user experience, reliability, and impact, not just code or models.
Curiosity for education and working in a mission-driven environment — high energy for ToU’s mission beats a perfect CV.
Resident in Berlin, or relocating before your start date. Fully remote day-to-day. EU work authorization preferred.
💡 Nice to have
Experience with AWS and serverless environments such as AWS Lambda.
Familiarity with structured LLM outputs, basic evals, or human-in-the-loop AI UX.
Background in edtech.
Interest in deployment, monitoring, and operational practices.
Experience collaborating closely with product and design in a small team.
German language skills are a nice-to-have, not required.

Compensation
As an international remote-first organisation, compensation is benchmarked against role level, experience, internal equity, and local market conditions in the candidate’s country of residence. The advertised range reflects the base salary for this role. Depending on the role and seniority level, additional compensation components, such as VSOPs, may also be offered.
