Overview
Next Chapter Technology (NCT) is hiring a highly technical, hands-on Head AI Engineer to build and operate our AI Application Modernization Factory and use it to rapidly transform the CaseWorks platform.
This is not a management or oversight role.
This is a builder role responsible for:
Writing production code
Designing and deploying AI systems
Refactoring core parts of the product
Standing up a new AI-driven development model
You will personally lead from the front—building the first version yourself, then scaling it through a small, high-performing team.
Mission (First 6–12 Months)
Stand up a working AI Factory used in real development workflows
Use it to refactor and modernize core CaseWorks components
Deliver production AI features inside the product (not prototypes)
Enable AI-assisted engineering workflows across the team
Drive material improvements in delivery speed and product capability within months—not years
Core Responsibilities
Build the AI Factory (Hands-On)
Design and personally build the first version of the AI Application Modernization Factory
Implement code generation, RAG systems, and multi-agent workflows
Create systems that analyze legacy code and generate production-ready services
Rapidly Modernize the CaseWorks Platform
Identify high-impact areas to refactor immediately
Rebuild legacy components into scalable, cloud-native services
Replace manual workflows with AI-driven automation
Embed AI into HHS Workflows
Build production AI features such as document classification, summarization, and recommendations
Integrate directly into CaseWorks workflows
Rewire How We Build Software
Implement AI across the SDLC by building tooling directly
Drive adoption through hands-on execution and delivery
Ship Fast, Safely
Use feature flags, shadow mode, and monitoring
Own production outcomes
Lead Through Execution
Act as the most senior technical builder
Mentor through direct collaboration
Required Qualifications
8+ years hands-on software engineering
Proven experience building and shipping complex systems
Experience refactoring legacy systems
Strong cloud-native and DevSecOps experience
AI Engineering Requirements
Experience with RAG, LLM orchestration, and AI systems in production
Experience building AI agents or workflows
