Job Overview
The Vice President of Research & Development is responsible for leading the company's research, product development, engineering, and technical innovation strategy.
This role oversees the development of new products, technologies, platforms, and solutions from concept through commercialization, ensuring that R&D activities are aligned with the company's business strategy, customer needs, and long-term growth objectives.
The VP of R&D serves as a strategic bridge between technology, product development, engineering, innovation, customer requirements, and commercial objectives, driving technical excellence, product quality, development efficiency, and sustainable innovation.
Key Responsibilities
I. R&D Strategy and Planning
Develop and execute the company's research and development strategy in alignment with corporate objectives and market opportunities.
Establish short-term and long-term R&D priorities, technology roadmaps, development plans, and investment strategies.
Identify emerging technologies and research opportunities that can create new products, capabilities, and competitive advantages.
Ensure R&D resources are aligned with strategic business priorities.
II. Product and Technology Development
Lead the development of new products, technologies, platforms, and technical solutions.
Oversee the complete product development lifecycle from concept, research, design, prototyping, testing, validation, and commercialization.
Ensure products meet customer requirements, technical specifications, quality standards, cost targets, and launch timelines.
Promote continuous product improvement and technology innovation.
III. Research and Innovation
Lead advanced research and technology innovation initiatives.
Monitor emerging technologies, scientific developments, industry trends, and competitive technologies.
Evaluate opportunities involving artificial intelligence, automation, advanced materials, software, hardware, digital technologies, or other relevant technologies.
Develop partnerships with research institutions, universities, technology companies, and strategic partners where appropriate.
IV. Engineering and Technical Management
Provide leadership and technical direction to engineering and R&D teams.
Establish engineering standards, development methodologies, technical processes, and best practices.
Improve product development efficiency, engineering quality, and technical execution.
Support the resolution of complex technical challenges and critical development issues.
V. Product Quality and Technical Excellence
Establish quality standards and technical requirements throughout the R&D and product development lifecycle.
Ensure appropriate testing, validation, reliability, safety, and performance processes are implemented.
Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies.
Work closely with Quality, Manufacturing, Operations, and Supply Chain teams to ensure successful product commercialization.
VI. R&D Portfolio and Project Management
Manage the company's R&D portfolio and prioritize development projects based on strategic value, market opportunity, technical feasibility, investment requirements, and expected return.
Establish project milestones, budgets, resources, and performance indicators.
Monitor development progress and address project risks, delays, and resource constraints.
Ensure key R&D projects are delivered according to agreed objectives, budgets, and timelines.
VII. Intellectual Property and Technology Management
Develop strategies for protecting and maximizing the value of the company's intellectual property and technical assets.
Oversee patents, proprietary technologies, technical know-how, and other intellectual property initiatives in cooperation with Legal and relevant business teams.
Evaluate technology licensing, partnerships, acquisitions, and external technology opportunities.
Maintain appropriate confidentiality and intellectual property protection throughout the development process.
VIII. Cross-functional Collaboration
Work closely with Product, Marketing, Sales, Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, Finance, and other business functions.
Translate customer needs and market requirements into technical and product development priorities.
Support product launches, commercialization strategies, cost optimization, and product lifecycle management.
Ensure effective communication between R&D and commercial organizations.
IX. R&D Budget and Resource Management
Develop and manage the R&D budget and technology investment portfolio.
Allocate technical resources, equipment, facilities, and personnel according to strategic priorities.
Evaluate R&D investment effectiveness and optimize resources based on business impact.
Manage relationships with external technology providers, engineering partners, research organizations, and development vendors.
X. Leadership and Organizational Development
Build and lead a high-performing R&D and engineering organization.
Develop technical leaders, researchers, engineers, product development professionals, and specialized technical talent.
Establish talent development, succession planning, technical career paths, and performance management systems.
Foster a culture of innovation, technical excellence, collaboration, experimentation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Education Background
Bachelor's degree or above in Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Product Development, or a related technical field.
Master's degree or PhD preferred, particularly for technology-intensive or research-driven industries.
MBA or advanced business qualification is a plus for candidates responsible for significant commercial and organizational functions.
Work Experience
Typically 15+ years of experience in research and development, engineering, product development, technology, or related fields, including 8+ years in senior R&D or technical leadership positions.
Proven track record of leading large-scale R&D organizations and successfully developing and commercializing new products or technologies.
Strong experience managing multidisciplinary engineering, research, and product development teams.
Demonstrated experience managing R&D portfolios, technology roadmaps, development budgets, intellectual property, and strategic innovation programs.
Experience working closely with C-suite executives, product leaders, engineering teams, customers, strategic partners, and external research organizations preferred.
International or multi-market R&D and product development experience strongly preferred.
Strong technical leadership, strategic thinking, innovation, project management, problem-solving, communication, and organizational leadership skills.
