We believe the next generation of great investment firms will look different from the last. They will combine exceptional investment judgment with proprietary data, software and AI; operate with small, high-ownership teams; and build deep domain expertise rather than compete for every deal.

About the role
We are looking for a senior investor to help lead our investments in software and AI.
This is not simply a deal execution role. We are looking for someone who can develop an independent point of view on where technology is going, build relationships with exceptional founders before they become obvious, and develop the conviction to lead investments when the answer is not yet clear.
You will work directly with our Partners across investments from pre-seed to pre-Series A, primarily across Asia-Pacific. You will have significant ownership: originating opportunities, developing investment theses, leading technical and commercial diligence, presenting to Investment Committee, negotiating and executing investments, and working closely with founders after we invest.
We are particularly interested in someone who brings genuine technical depth. You should be able to go beyond understanding an AI company’s pitch and interrogate the underlying technology: architecture, models, data, infrastructure, developer workflows, technical differentiation and the rate at which an apparent moat may, or may not, commoditise.
What you will own:
Find exceptional people & companies early. Build relationships with technical founders, researchers and emerging ecosystems before they become consensus opportunities.
Lead investments end-to-end. Own opportunities from first meeting and thesis development through technical and commercial diligence, Investment Committee, negotiation and execution.
Develop differentiated investment theses. Build deep expertise in areas such as AI infrastructure, developer tooling, vertical and applied AI, software infrastructure, and other emerging categories where January Capital can develop an edge.
Set the standard for technical diligence. Help the investment team distinguish genuine technical differentiation from features that are likely to commoditise, and continuously improve how we evaluate AI and software companies.
Partner with founders after investment. Hold board or observer positions where appropriate and support founders across product, hiring, customers, strategy and future financing.
Build January Capital’s technical network. Develop deep relationships with founders, engineers, researchers and academic communities across Southeast Asia, Australia and the US.
Develop the next generation of investors. Mentor junior investors and raise the standard of sourcing, research, diligence and investment thinking across the team.
Help build an AI-native investment firm. Work alongside our data and engineering capabilities to improve the proprietary tools, datasets and workflows we use to find and evaluate companies.
Contribute to the institution. Help build the research, content, events and knowledge infrastructure that compounds January Capital’s advantage over time.
Who we're looking for:
We expect that you will bring:
Approximately 7+ years of relevant experience across venture investing, company building, software engineering, AI/ML, research or technology leadership.
A deep technical foundation, ideally including formal training in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, Engineering or a related discipline, combined with meaningful experience building or evaluating technology.
Evidence that you can originate opportunities and form independent conviction, rather than relying on consensus or established market narratives.
The ability to understand software and AI companies at a technical level, from architecture and data through to models, infrastructure and developer workflows—and connect that understanding to commercial outcomes.
Genuine fluency with the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem and a habit of experimenting with new models, tools and technical approaches yourself.
Founder empathy, ideally developed through building a company or operating alongside founders in a senior technical or product capacity.
Exceptional analytical and communication ability. You should be able to turn complexity into a clear argument and defend that argument when smart people disagree.
The maturity and ambition to operate with significant autonomy in a small investment partnership where individual ownership matters.
