Senior Frontend Engineer (Tech Lead)

We're looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer to lead the design and technical direction of user-facing applications that directly improve access to services for Veterans and their families. You'll set the technical approach for your team, mentor other engineers, and work closely with backend, design, and product leads to deliver reliable, user-centered digital services. This is a hands-on technical leadership role: you'll write code, but you'll also own architecture decisions, raise the technical bar across the team, and be the person others turn to when a hard problem needs a call made. Experience with the VA's design system, accessibility requirements, or federal digital service delivery is highly valued.
What You'll Bring
8+ years of professional experience building production frontend applications, with a track record of increasing technical scope and responsibility over that time
Strong experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React preferred) and building responsive, component-based UIs at scale
Proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, and TypeScript, including cross-browser compatibility and performance optimization
Deep familiarity with state management approaches (Redux or similar) and the judgment to choose the right pattern for a given problem rather than defaulting to one tool
Experience designing how frontend applications consume and integrate with APIs, particularly in high-security or large-scale systems, including input into API contract and data-shape decisions
Proven track record owning production reliability: diagnosing root causes (not just symptoms), leading incident response, and putting guardrails in place to prevent recurrence
Experience setting technical direction and making architecture decisions for a frontend codebase, including tradeoffs between speed, maintainability, and scale
Experience mentoring other engineers through code review, pairing, and technical guidance, and raising the overall quality bar of a team's codebase
Ability to take ambiguous, loosely-scoped problems and turn them into a clear technical plan other engineers can execute against
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders and represent frontend engineering in cross-functional planning
Demonstrated ability to prioritize, manage dependencies, and deliver in complex environments with competing priorities
Experience working in Agile development environments, including shaping sprint scope and technical planning, not just executing tickets
Preferred
Familiarity with the VA Design System, US Web Design System (USWDS), or other government design standards
Prior experience supporting a federal agency or working within federal accessibility/security compliance requirements (Section 508, WCAG, FedRAMP-adjacent constraints)
