Epidemiologist / Surveillance Subject Matter Expert (SME)

Certified Technical Experts, Inc. (CTE) is seeking an experienced Epidemiologist / Surveillance Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide applied epidemiology and public health surveillance expertise to help ensure technology solutions accurately support disease surveillance, case investigation, notification, and reporting workflows. The Epidemiologist / Surveillance SME serves as a bridge between public health practice and technical product delivery.
Responsibilities :
• Provide subject matter expertise on applied epidemiology, case surveillance, investigation, notification, and reporting workflows.
• Advise Product Managers, analysts, designers, engineers, and QA teams on public health operational requirements and terminology.
• Review requirements, workflows, data elements, and business rules for alignment with public health practice and surveillance standards.
• Support interpretation of surveillance data standards, reporting guidance, and jurisdictional use cases.
• Participate in requirements workshops, product reviews, demonstrations, and user feedback sessions.
• Help identify public health impacts, edge cases, and data-quality considerations associated with system changes.
• Support validation of workflows and outcomes with representative users and stakeholders.
• Contribute to training, documentation, and knowledge transfer for public health functionality.
• Collaborate with informatics and interoperability specialists on standardized reporting and data exchange needs.
• Promote solutions that reduce burden while preserving surveillance accuracy and completeness.
Qualifications :
• 10+ years of applied epidemiology, public health surveillance, or closely related experience.
• Strong knowledge of case surveillance, case notification, disease investigation, and public health reporting practices.
• Experience with NNDSS or comparable national, state, or local surveillance environments.
• Ability to interpret public health guidance, surveillance standards, and data requirements.
• Experience collaborating with technical delivery teams on health IT solutions.
• Strong analytical, written, verbal, and stakeholder communication skills.
• Ability to explain complex epidemiologic concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience working across Federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial public health organizations is desirable.
Required: Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Science in Epidemiology, or a closely related graduate degree.
Preferred: Advanced epidemiology, public health, or informatics training.
Certifications
• Certified in Public Health (CPH)
• Certification in Infection Control (CIC), where applicable
Equivalent or advanced certifications may be considered where appropriate based on the candidate’s experience and the needs of the position.
Preffered Experience
• CDC or jurisdictional public health surveillance experience.
• Experience supporting NBS or comparable surveillance systems.
• Knowledge of case notification, eCR, ELR, or public health interoperability.
• Experience participating in Agile product development or user-centered design activities.
Work Authorisation:
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Must be able to successfully complete the applicable Government background investigation.
• Must be eligible to obtain and maintain required Federal credentials and information-system access.
• Must comply with applicable Federal security, privacy, confidentiality, and acceptable-use requirements.
