Company Description Quokka is a modern, expression-oriented programming language focused on deterministic semantics, verifiable self-hosting, and a safe, exception-free core. The language is strictly self-hosted, with its lexer, parser, AST, and evaluator all implemented in Quokka, while a minimal C bootstrap host only initializes the environment. Quokka emphasizes immutability by default and uses `Option` and `Result` types for error handling instead of traditional exceptions. The ecosystem also includes Joey, an optional ML extension that securely connects Quokka to Python, PyTorch, and Unsloth via JSON-based IPC while keeping the core language isolated. Quokka is designed to explore how a programming language can understand and construct itself, offering a unique environment for programming language enthusiasts and systems thinkers.
Role Description As a Contributor (Unpaid), you will support the ongoing development and documentation of the Quokka language and its ecosystem in a remote, volunteer capacity. Day-to-day tasks may include exploring and testing language features, writing example code and small libraries, drafting or refining documentation and tutorials, and contributing to discussions about language design and tooling. You may also assist with improving developer workflows, triaging and documenting issues, and proposing enhancements for Quokka and Joey integration. Collaboration with maintainers and other contributors will take place via online communication channels, code repositories, and issue trackers, with flexibility in time commitment and task selection.
Qualifications
Interest in programming language design, compilers, interpreters, or self-hosted language ecosystems.
Experience with at least one modern programming language (such as Python, Rust, C, or similar) and willingness to learn Quokka.
Ability to read and write clear technical documentation, examples, and code comments for developers.
Comfort working with Git-based workflows, issue tracking tools, and remote collaboration platforms.
Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative, respectful communication style.
Familiarity with ML/AI tooling (e.g., Python + PyTorch) or IPC concepts is a plus but not required.
Previous open-source contribution experience is beneficial but not mandatory.
