Senior Back-end Developer - Volunteer

Use your back-end skills to build the systems behind Ignite Hubs’ website and digital products, enabling more children and young people to access impactful learning opportunities.

Play a vital role in helping Ignite Hubs deliver high-quality, inclusive education to children and young people who need it most. We work particularly with girls, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and those from underrepresented backgrounds in STEM. Your contribution directly supports educational equity and helps young people develop skills critical to future learning and opportunities.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for someone with at least three years’ professional back-end development experience.
You should have experience designing and building APIs, databases and integrations for web applications. Experience with Microsoft Azure, Salesforce and relational databases is particularly relevant to this role.
Ignite Hubs currently uses Salesforce as a core system and is planning a future transition to Supabase. Experience working with Salesforce data, APIs or integrations, and supporting data migration from legacy systems to PostgreSQL or Supabase, would therefore be valuable.
You should understand user authentication, access permissions, secure handling of personal data and payment integrations. Experience with Stripe or similar payment providers would be helpful.
We would particularly welcome experience of Azure hosting, deployment pipelines, cloud databases and integrating multiple digital systems.

What will you be doing?
We are looking for a Senior Back-end Developer to help build and improve the systems behind Ignite Hubs’ digital products.
Your initial focus will be our new website, including the systems that support registration, booking, user accounts and payments. You may also support technical work across the Ignite Learning & Careers Hub and Ignite Portal, which are being developed by volunteers and external partners.
Working with Product Owners, front-end developers and other technical volunteers, you will
Design and build secure, maintainable back-end services and APIs.
Support the development of registration, booking, account and payment functionality.
Help design and manage databases, data relationships and user permissions.
Connect the website with relevant external systems and services.
Review back-end code and provide constructive feedback to junior developers.
Help investigate and resolve technical issues, bugs and integration problems.
Help ensure that systems can be maintained and developed as Ignite Hubs grows.
