New Product Development (NPD) Engineer

CPS Technologies is seeking a New Product Development Engineer – Advanced Materials & Emerging Technologies
About the Position:
We are seeking a New Product Development (NPD) Engineer to join our New Product Development team in this on-site position. In this role you will primarily be responsible for transitioning new materials, manufacturing processes, and product technologies from laboratory or R&D-scale development into controlled, repeatable manufacturing processes capable of supporting initial product release. This role serves as the technical bridge between R&D and production. The NPD Engineer will take processes that have demonstrated technical feasibility and mature them through equipment selection, process definition, experimentation, tooling development, validation, documentation, and manufacturing readiness. The company is located in Norton, MA and will be relocating to a larger facility in nearby Attleboro, MA in 2027.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the New Product Development Manager, the NPD Engineer will primarily be responsible for:
Develop and execute process maturation plans that define technical requirements, development activities, risks, resources, equipment needs, validation criteria, and manufacturing-readiness milestones.
Translate laboratory procedures and experimental methods into practical production processes with clearly defined operating parameters, controls, and acceptance criteria.
Design and conduct structured experiments, including design of experiments, to identify critical process parameters, understand process interactions, establish operating windows, and improve process capability.
Develop production tooling, fixtures, molds, material-handling methods, and other process aids necessary to support safe, repeatable, and efficient manufacturing.
Establish process flow, equipment requirements, material requirements, cycle times, staffing assumptions, inspection points, and controls for new processes and products.
Identify critical material, product, and process characteristics and develop appropriate methods for monitoring and controlling them during manufacturing.
Assisting Business Development, Manufacturing, and Quality departments:
Interact with customers to better understand requirements of current and future CPS products in an effort to establish production cost estimates and support preparation of quotation.
Collaboratively apply knowledge of advanced materials and manufacturing techniques with the Business Development team to identify new product opportunities.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a similar discipline is required.
BS with 3+ years experience
MS with 2+ years experience
Proficiency with Solidworks or comparable modeling software.
Demonstrated Product Introduction, and/or Process Maturation experience including a track record of scaling production processes to meet internal or external requirements.
Demonstrated ability to work safely with furnaces, presses, powders, molten metals, chemicals, compressed gases, or other industrial processing equipment, as applicable.
Ability to interpret and develop engineering drawings, specifications, material requirements, process instructions, and technical test data
Experience troubleshooting manufacturing or laboratory-scale processes using structured problem-solving methods such as root-cause analysis, designed experiments, statistical analysis, or equivalent analytical approaches.
Working knowledge of material-processing relationships, inclusive of raw materials, process parameters, thermal cycles, atmosphere, pressure, and tooling influence final material properties and product performance.
Materials characterization techniques such as SEM/EDS, light microscopy, mechanical such as metallography, optical microscopy, density measurement, dimensional inspection, mechanical testing, porosity evaluation, or microstructural analysis.
U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Broad background in Materials Science/Metallurgy/Composites Engineering and experience with traditional industrial metallurgical processes and procedures (metal casting, heat treating, coating, brazing/sealing)
Knowledge of material process behaviors, with experience in one of the following applied areas, refractory alloy processing, metal 3D Printing, powder metallurgy, ceramic processing, and/or Metal Injection Molding
Knowledge of additive manufacturing techniques and applications (laser powder bed fusion, binder jetting, and others) for both metals and ceramics
Experience with finite element analysis (FEA), Multiphysics simulation, or other engineering modeling and simulation tools for evaluating thermal, structural, fluid, or coupled physical systems.
Able to obtain DoD Security Clearance
