We have an opening for a Digital Collections and Preservation Specialist who is responsible for developing and curating technical collections within Strategic Deterrence (SD) Knowledge Management’s repository systems, performing quality assurance and metadata review of digitized and repository content, and applying archival and preservation principles to support the long-term discoverability and integrity of mission-relevant technical knowledge. In this role, you will work closely with subject matter experts to identify, organize, and prioritize materials for collection development, and contributes to the program’s long-term archival succession planning. This position will be in the Administration Division within the Operations and Business Directorate and is matrixed to the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.
This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
Develop and curate technical collections within the repository, from source materials through to a published, discoverable entry.
Recommend collections, resources, or materials for addition to the repository based on programmatic needs identified in collaboration with subject matter experts.
Perform quality assurance and metadata review of digitized and repository content, verifying accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established metadata standards.
Apply established metadata practices when preparing content for repository ingestion.
Support duplication and completeness checks prior to collection development or ingestion.
Use established taxonomies to organize knowledge collections.
Maintain records and documentation associated with collection development activities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional responsibilities at the A04.3 level
Identify and recommend specialized knowledge collections to support programmatic goals, in collaboration with subject matter experts and program stakeholders.
Apply archival appraisal, retention, and digital-preservation principles to evaluate, prioritize, and develop specialized knowledge collections.
Perform metadata remediation on existing repository content, identifying and correcting inconsistencies or errors, using scripting or bulk-editing tools (e.g., Python, OpenRefine) as needed.
Modify, maintain, and provide input on specialized taxonomies used to organize knowledge collections, based on collection development experience and subject matter needs.
Independently represent the collections and preservation function in cross-team and cross-program planning, developing work plans and coordinating collection development activities.
Contribute to documentation and best practices for repository content management, supporting long-term archival succession planning.
Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to less experienced staff on collection development and quality practices.
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
Experience working in a library, archives, or repository environment, with knowledge of metadata standards and collection development practices.
Experience using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
Demonstrated attention to detail and quality assurance discipline.
Experience working with subject matter experts to identify and organize technical or historical content.
Ability to work independently and reliably in a secure environment.
Additional qualifications at the A04.3 level
Extensive knowledge of metadata standards, controlled vocabularies, and repository systems.
Experience with, or knowledge of, metadata remediation techniques and tools (e.g., Python, OpenRefine) for correcting or standardizing records at scale.
Experience with, or knowledge of, archival principles and practices, or digital preservation standards.
Experience developing specialized knowledge collections, including design and collection-development planning.
Experience training, mentoring, or providing technical directions to other staff.
Qualifications We Desire
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, Archives and Records Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Pay Range
$94,560 - $138,888 Annually
$94,560 - $115,728 Annually for the A04.2 level
$113,400 - $138,888 Annually for the A04.3 level
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
