Role Purpose
The Product Owner is responsible for defining, prioritizing, and guiding the development of TMS product capabilities that solve meaningful customer and transportation industry problems. This role serves as the primary bridge between customers, business stakeholders, transportation subject-matter experts, and engineering.
The Product Owner translates business needs and transportation workflows into clear product requirements, manages the product backlog, and works closely with development teams to deliver scalable, intuitive, and commercially valuable TMS capabilities.
The role requires an understanding of transportation operations and the ability to balance customer needs, industry requirements, technical considerations, business objectives, and long-term product strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Product Ownership & Backlog Management
Own and maintain the product backlog for assigned TMS capabilities.
Define, refine, and prioritize epics, features, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
Ensure development teams have clear, actionable requirements.
Continuously evaluate and reprioritize work based on customer value, business priorities, operational impact, and technical considerations.
Maintain alignment between near-term delivery priorities and the broader product roadmap.
Transportation Domain Expertise
Develop a strong understanding of transportation processes, workflows, and industry practices.
Understand the needs of shippers, carriers, brokers, logistics providers, and other transportation stakeholders.
Translate real-world transportation processes into scalable software capabilities.
Identify gaps, inefficiencies, and opportunities within existing TMS functionality.
Stay informed about evolving transportation technologies, integrations, industry practices, and customer expectations.
Customer & Stakeholder Collaboration
Partner with customers and internal stakeholders to understand problems, workflows, and desired outcomes.
Participate in customer discovery, and solution discussions.
Represent the voice of the customer throughout the product development lifecycle.
Work with Sales, Customer Success, Implementation, Support, and Operations teams to identify recurring customer needs and product opportunities.
Balance individual customer requests against broader product applicability and TMS scalability.
Requirements & Solution Definition
Convert business problems into clear functional and non-functional requirements.
Identify functionality gaps and define potential solutions.
Collaborate with UX/UI teams to create intuitive user experiences.
Work with architects and engineers to understand technical implications and constraints.
Define acceptance criteria and participate in feature validation and user acceptance testing.
Agile Delivery
Work closely with engineering teams throughout development.
Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, demos, and retrospectives.
Answer questions and clarify requirements during development.
Review completed functionality against defined acceptance criteria.
Help identify and resolve scope, dependency, and requirement issues that could impact delivery.
Product Quality & Continuous Improvement
Validate that delivered functionality solves the intended business problem.
Analyze customer feedback, support issues, usage data, and operational metrics to identify improvement opportunities.
Partner with engineering and QA to identify defects and prioritize remediation.
Continuously improve existing TMS capabilities rather than focusing solely on new functionality.
Success in the Product Owner role is demonstrated by the ability to:
