Role Description This is a full-time, on-site General Surgery Medical Coder role based in Chennai. The Medical Coder will review general surgery clinical documentation and assign accurate ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes in accordance with official coding guidelines and payer-specific requirements. Day-to-day responsibilities include verifying the completeness and clarity of operative notes, identifying appropriate modifiers, and ensuring correct sequencing of diagnoses and procedures. The role involves working within coding and billing systems to support clean claims submission, reducing denials and improving reimbursement, while adhering to compliance standards and internal quality benchmarks. The Medical Coder will collaborate with clinicians, billing teams, and quality auditors to address documentation queries, participate in coding audits, and contribute to continuous process improvement.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess strong knowledge of general surgery coding, including accurate application of ICD diagnosis codes and CPT/HCPCS procedure codes.
Candidates should possess skills in reviewing clinical and operative documentation, interpreting medical terminology and anatomy, and validating coding against established guidelines.
Candidates should possess proficiency in using healthcare coding and billing software, electronic health records (EHR), and basic office productivity tools.
Candidates should possess an understanding of payer policies, claim submission requirements, and compliance standards such as NCCI edits, LCDs/NCDs, and HIPAA regulations.
Candidates should possess attention to detail, analytical thinking, and the ability to meet productivity and accuracy targets in a fast-paced environment.
Certification such as CPC, CCS, or equivalent from a recognized coding body is preferred; prior experience in general surgery coding or hospital/outpatient coding is highly beneficial.
Relevant educational background in healthcare, life sciences, or a related field, along with effective verbal and written communication skills, is desirable.
