About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Steel Detailer with a minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience using Tekla Structures in the Australian commercial steel fabrication sector. In this role, you will be responsible for creating accurate 3D BIM models, shop drawings, assembly details, and erection plans for structural steelwork across residential and commercial construction projects (e.g., multi-storey buildings, warehouses, retail centres, and industrial facilities). You will ensure all models and documentation adhere strictly to AS/NZS 5131 (Structural steelwork - Fabrication and erection), AS 4100 (Steel structures), and specific Construction Categories (CC1 to CC3).
Key Responsibilities:
3D Modelling & Shop Drawings (Tekla Structures)
Build full 3D structural steel models using Tekla Structures in alignment with structural and architectural design intent.
Produce clear, compliant fabrication shop drawings, single-part drawings, assembly drawings, and general arrangement (GA) / erection plans.
Generate NC/NC1 and DXF files for automated workshop CNC equipment and export accurate Bills of Materials (BOM), bolt lists, and cutting lists.
Detail welded and bolted connections in accordance with structural engineer details and Australian standard connection practices. AS/NZS 5131 & Australian Code Compliance
Ensure all model outputs and detailing procedures align with AS/NZS 5131 requirements based on the project's designated Construction Category (CC1, CC2, or CC3).
Apply appropriate welding symbols, surface preparation notes, and protective coating callouts (hot-dip galvanising to AS/NZS 4680, paint systems to AS/NZS 2312) on shop drawings.
Account for transport limitations, site access restrictions, and crane lifting constraints during model framing and member splitting.
Coordination & Project Delivery:
Review architectural/structural drawings and specifications; identify design clashes or missing details and raise structured RFIs (Requests for Information).
Participate in 3D BIM coordination meetings.
Perform rigorous self-checks and peer checks of models and drawings before release for workshop fabrication.
Liaise directly with shop fabricators, project managers, site managers, and riggers to address technical queries during fabrication and erection.
Requirements & Qualifications Experience:
Experience: 3+ years of dedicated steel detailing experience using Tekla Structures, preferably within the Australian structural steel fabrication industry.
Standards Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of Australian standards,
including:
AS/NZS 5131 (Structural steelwork – Fabrication and erection)
AS 4100 (Steel structures)
AS/NZS 1554.1 (Structural steel welding)
Standard Australian steel section designations (UB, UC, PFC, SHS, RHS, CHS, Welded Beams/Columns). Technical Skills:
High proficiency in Tekla Structures (3D modelling, drawing generation, custom components, drawing templates, and attribute setups for Australian standards).
Ability to interpret Australian architectural, structural, and civil engineering drawings seamlessly.
Understanding of connection design fundamentals, fabrication processes, and site erection workflows. Communication
Clear written and verbal English communication skills for handling RFIs, design team coordination, and workshop queries.
Desirable Attributes:
Relevant Australian trade qualifications (e.g., Cert IV / Diploma in Structural Drafting or Engineering, or background as a Boilermaker/Fabricator).
Experience with Trimble Connect, Navisworks, or point cloud / 3D laser scan integration in Tekla.
Exposure to workshop management software integration (e.g., FabTrol, STRUMIS).
