About Kunstruct
Kunstruct is a hardware product studio based in Chennai. We build integrated physical products for clients, combining custom electronics, mechanical systems, and low-level software. We take early industrial design concepts and turn them into manufactured, real-world hardware.
Role Overview
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who is strong in mechanical product development, CAD and DFM. In this role, you will bridge the gap between our Industrial Design (ID) team, electronics hardware team, and manufacturing partners.
Your main job is to take raw aesthetic concepts (A-surfaces) and build the complete internal mechanical architecture (B/C-surfaces) behind them—handling everything from internal packaging and snap-fits to sealing and tooling readiness.
Key Responsibilities
Turn ID Concepts into Production CAD: Convert organic exterior surfaces into manufacturable 3D CAD assemblies without altering the original aesthetic or proportions.
Mechanism Design: Design functional mechanical features like snap-fits, screw bosses, living hinges, spring-loaded latches, and tactile button actions.
Internal Packaging: Package PCBs, batteries, cable runs, and heatsinks inside tight enclosures while ensuring proper clearances and assembly order.
Tolerance & GD&T: Run 2D/3D tolerance stack-ups so parts fit together cleanly without interference or unwanted play during production runs.
DFM / DFA: Design parts specifically for injection molding (drafts, wall thickness, ribs, sink prevention), CNC, sheet metal, and IP-rated sealing (gaskets/O-rings).
Prototyping: Build bench prototypes using in-house 3D printers or fast-turn CNC parts to test fit, switch feel, and joint strength.
What We Are Looking ForMust-Haves:
Education: Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Mechatronics, or a related field.
CAD & Surface Modeling: Strong skills in parametric 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or Fusion 360) with practical experience in surface modeling and managing large assemblies.
DFM Knowledge: Solid understanding of manufacturing constraints—especially plastic injection molding, tooling feedback, metal enclosures, and sealing.
Mechanism Experience: Proven experience designing physical enclosures and small mechanical features (snap-fits, latches, buttons).
Portfolio (Mandatory): We need to see photos or CAD screenshots of your actual mechanical work (internal details, exploded views, or physical builds). Resumes without portfolios will not be reviewed.
Nice-to-Haves:
Experience in consumer electronics, wearables, or small electromechanical products.
Basic FEA (structural) or thermal/CFD analysis experience.
Familiarity with thermal interface materials (TIMs) and heatsinks for electronics.
Working at Kunstruct
Full Product Ownership: You will design entire product assemblies from early concept through to factory bring-up, not just small individual brackets.
Direct Collaboration: Work directly alongside hardware engineers, firmware developers, and industrial designers under one roof.
Fast Prototyping: We build and test physical prototypes quickly rather than getting stuck in long review cycles.
How to Apply
Submit your resume along with a portfolio link showing:
CAD models or exploded views detailing internal mechanical features (ribs, bosses, snap-fits).
Photos or videos of physical prototypes or manufactured parts you designed.
