Role Description - The Art Restoration – Retouching Artist will perform hands-on conservation and restoration work on fine artworks, focusing on meticulous retouching that respects the integrity, history, and original intent of each piece. Day-to-day responsibilities include surface cleaning, stabilization, color matching, inpainting, varnish work, and detailed retouching under magnification and controlled lighting, as well as assisting with condition assessments and treatment documentation. The artist will collaborate with senior conservators to plan treatments, prepare before-and-after records, and ensure that all interventions align with international conservation ethics. This is a contract, on-site role based in Mumbai, working within a professional studio environment and following strict health, safety, and handling protocols.
Qualifications
Strong foundation in fine arts for art restoration retouching skills, with practical experience in retouching, inpainting, color matching, and understanding of surface treatment of paintings or works on paper.
Proficiency in studio practices, including safe handling of artworks, use of conservation-grade materials, and familiarity with tools such as magnification devices, micro-brushes, and controlled lighting setups.
Ability to document process clearly and accurately, including photographic records, and technical notes for internal use and client communication.
Understanding of conservation ethics and best practices, including reversibility of treatments, respect for original materials, and adherence to international professional standards.
Relevant academic background, such as a degree or formal training in fine arts, art history, or a closely related field.
Strong visual acuity, attention to detail, steady manual dexterity, and patience for meticulous, long-duration retouching work.
Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with conservators, technicians in a professional studio setting.
Experience working with museum, gallery, art conservation studio or heritage collections is an advantage; familiarity with provenance research, condition assessments, and collection care is beneficial.
