Head of Engineering & AI, Healthcare RCM Platform

OVERVIEW:
The D. E. Shaw group seeks an accomplished and hands-on head of engineering & AI to join Cove’s new healthcare revenue cycle management (RCM) platform. Cove, the firm’s buy-and-build private equity strategy, builds and scales category-leading businesses by combining strategic acquisitions, operational rigor, and purpose-built AI to transform how they operate. This role offers the unique opportunity to architect and launch a leading, AI-native RCM platform from inception, collaborating directly with the CEO, RCM operators and customers, and the Cove team to shape the platform’s technology and product direction.
WHAT YOU’LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:
Own the engineering strategy, technical roadmap, and platform architecture, partnering with leadership and stakeholders to define product and AI priorities from prototype through scaled deployment.
Engage directly with RCM operators and customers to analyze complex workflows, identify high-value opportunities, and rapidly convert them into production-ready technology.
Develop a shared data and orchestration platform that integrates EHRs, practice-management systems, clearinghouses, billing platforms, and payers, enabling AI agents to execute workflows safely and efficiently at scale.
Design and deploy AI agents across the revenue cycle, targeting improvements in accuracy, speed, and cost-to-collect for processes such as eligibility, prior authorization, claims, denials, payment posting, and collections.
Architect and deliver initial systems, set the technical standard, recruit an exceptional engineering team, and lead technology diligence and modernization for acquisitions.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
Eight or more years of experience building software and leading technical teams, with recent hands-on involvement in architecting, prototyping, and shipping production systems; prior experience as a head, VP, or director of engineering, or as a senior technical builder is valued.
Demonstrated 0-to-1 product-building expertise, with end-to-end ownership from customer discovery and architecture through launch, adoption, and iteration, and a record of turning customer insights into scalable product capabilities.
Proven ability to deliver AI-powered products into production, ideally with agentic workflows, complex integrations, data platforms, or workflow and browser automation.
Sound judgment regarding the application of autonomous AI versus human-in-the-loop controls.
Track record of recruiting and developing high-performing engineering teams, setting a high technical bar, and fostering a strong engineering culture.
Familiarity with healthcare data, privacy, security, and interoperability—or similar experience in fintech, insurance, enterprise workflow software, or other regulated environments—is highly relevant
The expected annual base salary for this position is $250,000 to $350,000 plus an annual performance bonus, meaningful equity participation in NewCo, and comprehensive benefits.
