About the Position
The Ocean Marine Claims Specialist manages, evaluates, and resolves complex, high-exposure claims across Hull & Machinery (H&M), Protection & Indemnity (P&I), Marine General Liability (MGL), Maritime Employer’s Liability (MEL), and Marine Operational Liability (MOLL). Serving as a technical specialist, this role directs casualty investigations, policy interpretation, reserving, and litigation management while collaborating with underwriters, brokers, TPAs, carrier partners, and legal counsel to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and organizational objectives.
Responsibilities
Claims Operations
Handle claims from first notice of loss through final resolution.
Perform claim investigations, coverage analysis, reserving, and settlement negotiations through closure.
Review complex, high-exposure, litigated, and coverage-sensitive claims.
Ensure accurate documentation within claims management systems.
Ensure timely and accurate claim handling in accordance with carrier guidelines, regulatory requirements, and company standards.
Monitor claim reserves and settlement authority to ensure appropriate financial management.
Litigation and Coverage Management
Partner with defense counsel, coverage counsel, carriers, and reinsurers on litigated and complex claims.
Evaluate coverage issues and assist with drafting or approving coverage determinations and reservation of rights letters.
Participate in mediation, settlement discussions, and large-loss strategy meetings as appropriate.
Identify opportunities for subrogation, salvage recovery, and fraud prevention.
Operational and Team Excellence
Actively collaborate with fellow claim team members, underwriters, and external partners to promote a supportive environment and ensure seamless operational success.
Collaborate with underwriting to provide claim insights that support underwriting decisions and product development.
Work closely with finance, compliance, and leadership on reporting, reserving, and operational initiatives.
Reporting & Analytics
Draft comprehensive, individual loss reports for high-exposure, complex, or litigated claims.
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc status reports.
Track loss trends and communicate portfolio findings to business leadership.
Carrier and Client Relationships
Maintain strong relationships with carriers, brokers, TPAs, legal counsel, and other business partners.
Participate in carrier and client review meetings and claim strategy discussions.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree or equivalent professional experience
7+ years of marine insurance claims experience
Professional insurance designations such as CPCU, AIC, ARM, AMIM, or SCLA are preferred
New York license preferred or willing to obtain
Demonstrated experience handling complex claims
Experience working directly with carriers, brokers, attorneys, and reinsurers preferred
Strong understanding of insurance policy interpretation, coverage analysis, litigation management, and claim resolution
Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making abilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience managing claim management systems and reporting tools
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
High level of professionalism, integrity, and sound business judgment

The base salary range for this position is $120k – $150k. The offered salary will be determined by a number of factors including skills, education, training, credentials and experience. Additionally, this position is eligible for a bonus in accordance with organizational practices.
