About The Team
Traffic Engineering powers secure, scalable, highly available traffic systems that support eBay’s global commerce platform. We build and operate traffic management and security capabilities across edge and service layers, including PoP strategy, caching, Kubernetes networking, and reliability improvements based on monitoring insights.
Role Summary
As a Traffic Engineering Architect, you will own architecture and technical direction across eBay’s traffic engineering platform, spanning traffic management, load balancing, service connectivity, PoP/caching optimization, and traffic security (rate limiting, bot mitigation, etc.). You will lead cross-team design, guide execution on critical initiatives, and drive measurable improvements in latency, availability, resilience, and security.
Key Responsibilities
Define architecture and technical strategy for global traffic systems: traffic management, load balancing, service connectivity, PoP optimization, caching, and traffic security controls.
Architect and deliver rate limiting and bot mitigation solutions across edge/service layers in partnership with Security.
Design and build high-performance, low-latency distributed systems using C/C++ and Go (Java in relevant components as needed).
Drive Kubernetes networking and platform patterns at scale, including CNI integrations, service mesh, IPAM, and production-grade deployment models.
Own technical tradeoffs across performance, scalability, reliability, security, operability, maintainability, and delivery timelines.
Establish/advance observability and engineering metrics; use production signals to improve SLOs, reduce incidents, and increase efficiency.
Lead operational excellence: incident prevention, resiliency design, capacity/performance tuning, and automated remediation where appropriate.
Align roadmaps and execution across Product, Infrastructure, SRE/Operations, and Security; resolve cross-team dependencies and drive technical consensus.
Mentor senior engineers/tech leads through architecture reviews, design reviews, and code reviews; raise engineering standards and consistency.
Contribute to innovation via open-source engagement, patents, and forward-looking exploration relevant to traffic systems.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
15+ years of software engineering experience with significant depth in networking/traffic engineering, distributed systems, and/or cyber security.
Strong proficiency in C/C++ and Go (Java acceptable/valuable for specific subsystems); experience building production-grade, high-performance systems.
Deep knowledge of Linux networking, traffic management fundamentals, and systems performance optimization.
Strong experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native infrastructure at scale.
Proven experience designing secure, scalable, observable distributed platforms and operating them in production.
Demonstrated cross-team technical leadership: driving architecture across multiple systems, influencing partners, and delivering large initiatives.
Strong communication, mentoring, and technical decision-making skills in ambiguous environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Envoy, service mesh, control plane/data plane architectures, NGINX/HAProxy, SDN, eBPF, or comparable technologies.
Experience with rate limiting, bot management, abuse prevention, and traffic security patterns (edge and service).
Background in PoP design, caching strategies, and internet-scale traffic optimization.
Vendor tool integration experience and operation in globally distributed environments.
Open-source contributions, patents, or externally visible technical leadership.
