Graduate Ecologist – Bird Surveys

The Vacancy
INIS Environmental Consultants is seeking a Graduate Ecologist to support our field team with standard bird surveys and other ecological fieldwork.
This is a full time (37.5 hours per week), fixed term position for 8 months.
This is an entry-level position suitable for a recent ecology or environmental science graduate. Previous professional experience is not required, as training and guidance will be provided. However, applicants should have a good knowledge of Irish bird species and be confident identifying common species by sight and sound.
Key responsibilities:
Undertake standard bird surveys in accordance with the agreed methodology.
Identify and accurately record bird species, numbers, behaviour and locations.
Complete clear and accurate field survey forms and electronic records.
Enter and organise survey data following fieldwork.
Follow survey instructions, project requirements and agreed schedules.
Use field equipment correctly and responsibly.
Report any access, safety or survey issues promptly.
Comply with company health and safety procedures.
Support the ecology team with other straightforward ecological surveys when required.
Travel to survey locations throughout Ireland, including occasional early-morning or evening work
Person specification:
A degree in ecology, environmental science, zoology or another relevant discipline.
Good knowledge of common Irish bird species.
Ability to identify birds by sight and, preferably, by call.
Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.
Ability to work independently after receiving appropriate training.
Good communication and organisational skills.
Willingness to work outdoors in different weather conditions.
Flexibility regarding working hours during survey periods.
Full, clean driving licence and willingness to travel.
Previous birdwatching or voluntary bird-survey experience -(desirable)
Membership of, or eligibility for membership of, CIEEM. - (desirable)
