About The Role
The Sr. Lead AI Engineer (GenAI Platform) at Capital One is a pivotal role within the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team. This position involves leading the development and deployment of advanced AI systems, particularly focusing on foundational large language models (LLMs) and generative AI platforms. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers to design innovative AI solutions that transform how the bank serves its customers and supports its internal operations. The role requires a deep understanding of AI and machine learning principles, as well as expertise in building scalable, responsible, and efficient AI systems. The Sr. Lead AI Engineer will also contribute to defining the technical vision and long-term roadmap of Capital One’s AI infrastructure, ensuring the organization remains at the cutting edge of AI research and application.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical foundation combined with extensive experience in AI and machine learning development. A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or related fields is required, with at least 6 years of relevant experience. Alternatively, a Master’s degree with at least 4 years of experience is acceptable. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, or Java is essential, with a minimum of 6 years of experience in software development. Additional preferred qualifications include 7+ years of experience deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, and a proven track record of leading and mentoring engineering teams. Familiarity with state-of-the-art AI techniques, including LLM inference, similarity search, vector databases, and model optimization, is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a passion for staying current with AI research, strong communication skills, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights.
Responsibilities
Partner with cross-functional teams to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer experience and operational efficiency.
Design, develop, test, and deploy AI software components including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, model evaluation, and governance frameworks.
Leverage a broad stack of open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, PyTorch, and others to build scalable AI solutions.
Invent and implement cutting-edge optimization techniques for large-scale LLM training and inference to improve performance, scalability, latency, and cost-efficiency.
Contribute to the technical vision and strategic roadmap of foundational AI systems, ensuring alignment with business objectives and technological advancements.
Mentor junior engineers, foster innovation, and promote best practices in AI development and deployment.
Ensure responsible AI practices by implementing guardrails, governance, and observability measures to maintain ethical standards and compliance.
